I didn't expect a book about gardening to be quite so engaging. Pollan takes the reader on a journey starting with his earliest memories of being in the garden through the establishment of his own garden. In the end though it is less about gardening tips and techniques and more philosophical. Pollan explores why we garden and some of the similarities and differences between British and American gardens.I've read many of Pollan's other books and I enjoyed this one almost as much as the others. The way he writes makes the topic accessible to the reader even if it isn't what you expect. There are some parts that are less interesting to me, specifically the very early portion and parts of the last chapter on seed catalogs. But there is humor and insight sprinkled throughout that make it enjoyable and worth picking up.

Overall enjoyable read. Pollan gets a little verbose in his love of quoting Thoreau, and diving into the history of gardening, but otherwise good narrative.It's a good read in what motivates us to garden, his story of his grandfather, and childhood any gardener could relate to in their own way.Don't read necessarily for advice, but more for enjoying what another gardener has to say about the subject.

I discovered Michael Pollan’s book, “Botany of Desire”, through required reading when taking a botany class during my undergraduate years; “Second Nature” was a natural follow-up companion, proving just as illuminating and fascinating. Pollan has created a niche for delicately crafting humor, advice, and contemplation about the relationship of humans with nature, and in the case of “Second Nature”, with both the physical and philosophical garden. As a teacher, writer, and gardener myself, I found some of my subconscious thoughts unearthed and glistening on the pages, as Pollan took me on a journey through otherwise unvoiced notions such as the sexuality of roses, the morality of compost, and man’s obsession with non-native lawns. The voyage was delightful, and it created more questions for me than it answered. For that reason, it did it’s job by unleashing further fascination about human coexistence with this awesome and powerful earth.

This is NOT a how to garden book. It is a thinking about the garden book. Even if a person never touched a shovel to earth , this is a wonderful series of essays about man and living with other life forms. This is science and philosophy, maybe back to the orinal meaning of natural philosophy. I especially liked the weed chapter. I have always had difficulty being ruthless in the garden. Now I understand that I should keep my part of the contract I make with the plants who feed me and let me live in beauty.

I enjoyed this book, found it to be both fun and enlightening. Although Pollan is a bit wordy at times, i generally agree with his perspective and appreciated his discussion of gardening v. "wilderness." Now I need to get back to my garden ...

I enjoy the book and especially its info on old roses. Michael is a little pretentious in his use of big words, it seems some are thrown in there just for fun! Good thing I am reading it on a Kindle...one finger dictionary, otherwise I would be consulting the dictionary often and getting derailed. I do like a story when I am reading about someone's building of their garden. Makes it very interesting for the reader. I am not finished with the book, but will use it as a reference.

This is a good read covering many attitudes about gardening and plants, forest and field. Pollan's style evolved from here to become more entertaining as well as informative but hints of that style are in this book. Like all of his books this is thought provoking.

Felt like a task to listen to... the writer seems very arrogant and narrow minded. I did not get through the book. It was a book assigned to a book club and most people in the group felt negatively about this book.

Really nice book with great ideas and recipes for use with essential oils. I bought a copy for a friend and for myself.

Very nice picture and presentation, however, the information is totally lacking. The scent recommendation is not good for me at least. The recipes dont explain why this oil should go to that formula. It is just for visual effect.

THIS book is everything I expected it to be. So easy to read and follow.

this was a gift to my husband . He is 73 and a hunter plus horseman (of the pastin addition to being a good and kind man.Anyway: he LOVED THIS BOOK and has passed it on to to others. Our daughter is going to read it next. It speaks how the world really was and how this type of life was "plain and simple" no frills but all worth it. These are the people who really know their business. These are the men who shaped the West. Too bad those days have ended. They offered young men the ability to grow up and learn and care and be surrounded with the life to always carry with them and learn and grow. It may have been hard, but I imagine it was well worth it. Having grown up in Kansas in the 50's I recall some of this life in my childhood and it makes me sad that our children no longer will know such existed. I fear our "realities" have been made out of digital media.

I love reading about the lives of cowgirls and cowboys from the past and looked forward to learning more about the life of Dayton Hyde. I was especially interested because of a documentary I had seen about the Wild Horse Sanctuary. This book is more rambling reminiscences and it appeared that some sections were being careful to protect the people being written about. While I commend being careful of other people, at times I felt it was watered down too much to maintain my interest in them. I had seen many Slim Pickens movies in my youth but until reading this book I didn't know (or had forgotten) that it was a brain tumor that ended his life.

When I was a teenager, I got to know an old cowboy named Charlie. He was born before the Great Depression and when it got bad on the farm, he saddled up his favourite horse and took off for Alaska. Worked his way across the US and Canada, made it all the way to Alaska and got a ride in a fishing boat so he could say he'd set foot on Siberia. I'll never forget all the great stories Charlie told and will always regret that I never heard more of them.Reading Dayton Hyde's book was the closest I've come to listening to Charlie. I just miss the fire and the cowboy coffee. The horses and their quirks, the cattle and the life tending them, the rodeoin' and the pranks, there's a little of all of it in this book. Word portraits of many loved friends now long gone but who will never be forgotten because they made their way into one of Mr Hyde's stories.A first class read of a fascinating life.

I believe this book to be one of THE BEST books about the contemporary American West.Beginning in the early 1900's this book chronicles what life was like on a remote Oregon cattle ranch and citing many characters that made up what was still the Wild West.....including some excellent information on the rodeo cowboys of a bygone era.I could not put this book down.....extremely well written and forthright giving the reader a rare glimpse into the life code of the West.Interwoven into this treasure are many instances of cowboy humor and logic .........If you enjoy The American West,do yourself a favor and read this book!

This is a short, fairly well written memoir of the author's life. It tells a great deal about the vagaries of life in the real old west, not the movie west.The author was quite versatile, cowboy, rodeo clown, rodeo photographer, Berkeley graduate, rancher, father, foster parent, author of several books, and presently honcho of a large wild horse rescue sanctuary in the Black Hills. He is featured in his latest role on a video which I saw on PBS.

I bought this book by mistake ! Courser in the wrong place. After realizing I had messed up, I didn't want to go to the trouble of fixing it. I started reading the book and from the very first page I was hooked. This is one of those books when you get done you wish you could find more like it, but you probably won't be able too. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Great book, got it for my Dad to read, read a few pages and wanted to keep it to finish! Oh well, guess I will read it when he is done.This story is about a really brave kid who wanted nothing more than a fantastic time in life. He got it! This is really what my own father should have done and been. Bitter sweet. A hard life that was wonderful at the same time. If you want a good read, this is it.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I lived in Klamath Falls right after WWII and remember many of the places and some of the names that Mr. Hyde describes. While I am younger than Dayton, I too, have a nostalgia for those earlier times. Mr Hyde is a good storyteller, and while he may have done some embellishment, the stories are a delight.

My 7 year old son has been reading the Ballpark Mysteries books for about a year and a half now, and he LOVES them. He's an avid baseball fan, but also has a love for reading in general. These books are fun and engaging, and he always complains that the chapters end with a "mystery" that makes you want to keep reading! We've read through all of the books in the series, and are now working on reading them all a second time!For those not familiar with the Ballpark Mysteries series, the books follow cousins Mike & Kate as they travel around the country visiting baseball stadiums (usually with Kate's mom, who is a sports reporter for a website, but sometimes with Kate's dad, who is a baseball scout I believe). Along the way, Mike and Kate inevitably encounter a mystery involving the stadium or one of the baseball players. Mike and Kate are great at solving mysteries, so they always figure things out by the end of the book. These books are great for both boys and girls, since the main characters are a boy and a girl.In this particular book, Mike and Kate are volunteering for a charity and are sleeping over at the baseball hall of fame. After everyone is asleep, they are sneaking around and notice that the Honus Wagner card is a fake. This book revolves around them trying to solve the mystery of who took the card.Throughout each book, the reader learns facts about each stadium and/or players, and there is also a fun facts page at the end of eachbook as well. My son has collected all of the books in the series, and is eagerly anticipating the release of the newest one, the Cardinal Caper!If your child likes these books, I would also highly recommend the Little Rhino series. Started buying these books for my son who is a big baseball fan but not always the best at reading fiction books. The whole series has been a hit and he likes that they take place in different ballpark (or cooperstown). They're starting to get a little young for him (he finished this in a day) but he still likes reading them.

Story line goes with the rest of the books in the series.

Each mystery takes place in a different ballpark in the USA.

By day, he is a sports marketing executive who developed an all-sports competition between Duke and Carolina called the Carlyle Cup. GO DUKE! THIS IS FOR TRUE FANS! ALL YOU CHEATOLINA ROBOTS NEED TO READ THIS! Been a Duke fan since 1986 and wanted to learn what the rivalry was about and how it start. This book details that and I bought this copy to leaned to all the HATERS in my area who know nothing about their so called FAVORITE TEAM! If you are going to be a fan then you should know a little history about what you are supporting! Another good one is The Blue Divide! So Quit Riding Mom and Dad's Coat Tails and learn about the FACTS! Cause if not for NC STATE there would be NO RIVALRY! GO DUKE! Oh yeah GO PACK!

This is a great book that gives you some insight into the greatest rivalry in sports. It's historical and Chansky gets inside both schools and teams to give you an inside look in the rivalry. Overall, a great read.

Chansky's book is a must for any true UNC or Duke fan, should be mandatory reading for the wine and cheesers and Kryzewskiville pretenders, and college hoops junkies will probably find it interesting as well. Chansky does a great job with recounting the details of this historical rivalry, giving interesting behind-the-scenes storylines, in-game analysis, and a plethora of statistics at the end of each chapter. Chansky begins the book with the 04-05 season and then in proceeding chapters goes decade by decade, finally concluding with 05. He is a UNC alum so dookies will probably cry bias, but overall his book is balanced and touches on positives and negatives of the players and coaches of both universities.The only negatives I found were Chanksy writing in an amateurish manner, neglecting the fans that really make the rivalry, and omitting his personal opinions and reflections on the rivalry. Chansky's writing style can sometimes be a little cliche-ridden, and boring-- what you may expect from a sports writer who did a book. He also gets bogged down in the details and draws out game accounts that could be summarized in a much more succinct manner. Chansky also glosses over the fans of the rivalry. He has a couple of hazing anecdotes (e.g. Jordan's jersey being stolen from the Dean Dome), but doesn't get into all the juicy stuff like message board vitriol, crowd antics, and personal accounts from students and fans. That would have been very fun. And finally, Chansky, who has covered both teams for nearly three decades, doesn't lend much insight or opinion on the rivalry. He pretty much states facts and recounts various anecdotes and controversies. I would have loved to know what he thought about certain topics (e.g., Krykewski's perceived arrogance and phoniness, Dean's perceived God complex, etc.). Oh well, I guess I have to wait for Will Blythe's book for that ("To Hate Like This Is to Be Happy Forever...").All-and-all, Chansky's book is a very worthwhile read for those who follow either program or for true hoops lovers. It may lack in panash and the plight of the fan, but it does an exemplary job in covering the rivalry history and mixing in some interesting stories along the way.

I am a Duke fan - the small venue, the fans, and its storied coach. Had to buy the book when I saw it. Liked it very much - though I could do with much less Carolina! This is a unique rivalry and the book conveys the heart of it. Not to be missed by fans/haters of either school.
