A super sweet story that we will keep in our Autumn books box to read year after year. The artwork and words are both beautiful.

This amazing story made me cry with happiness. There are very few stories I've found that are absolutely perfect in every respect, this book is one of them. The illustrations are beautiful, the story just right. It embodies all the best qualities I want my little man to develop, and is a heartwarming, timeless tale. If you have children of any age, this should be on your bookshelf.

A very lovely book. The story is sweet and charming and the pictures are soft and sweet. This book really keeps the interest of the children. It follows an old woman who wants to make apple cake but doesn't have apples and how she goes about getting them through meeting and trading with other people. I'd recommend it greatly. Being interested in the Nine Years War during the time of Louis XIV I was anxiously awaiting the release of this book. I already have Mark Allen's articles from WI on the French and British, but was excited to see he now included the Dutch. I was hoping that he might have done more of a revamp of the old WI articles. but alas he did not. If you have those articles, then you have more on the French (he did not include the article on the Irish in this book) and the same as the British. I found all but the article about the Dutch Guard to be new, but limited in scope. Comparing his details with the Hall works there are differences, but I know the material for this time period is not a lot at best.The thing I wish he had done more than anything was to not just refer a uniform to one of his plates, but to have also included a color description. By doing that one would not have to guess if he is showing a madder coat color or a crimson one for example. This was my feeling about his WI articles as well.Bottom line, if anyone has an interest in the military uniforms during the reign of Louis XIV, then this is a work worth having. For this reason and because there is so little uniform material available I am rating this book as a 5., and I hope he does a follow on volume(s) of other countries.
