A compendium of humor that has appeared in the New Yorker magazine since its inception in the 1920s. Each essay ends with the author's title and the year in which it was written. As the years passed so did what amused the reading public, but not as dramatically as one might expect. Foe example the selected offerings in this volume embrace periods by James Thurber and Robert Benchley and S. J. Perelman and Woody Allen. Each is a master of humor.

Other than a few funny stories the vast majority is not funny at all. The few you find funny may be different from the ones I do but you will still find the vast majority of these stories not at all funny.

Often still funny, albeit dated humor from an American humor icon - the New Yorker. The short, one-liner style nuggets are of particular interest.

Some classics are great - Woody Allen, Mike Nichols...but all in alll this is not the New Yorker at its funniest - or is it just that the editor's sense of humor differs from mine? Well, considering that lately all the fiction in the magazine seems to be written by the same author, editor's choice makes a difference.

Contains humor writing out of New Yorker magazine from several decades. Very clever.

I love New Yorker humor, prose as well as the cartoons, and this is a lovely collection. Some pieces are goofy fun, others are very arch, and some are quite sophisticated. It's a great compass that points to the wide world of humor to be had almost anywhere and everywhere.

Great is you like 3 to 5 minute reads that you remember and smile about all day! There are few books like this that have so many humorous stories in them!

The New Yorker never fails. If you want humor, go to the New Yorker. The only other publication that equals it is the Atlantic.

This book very much reminded me of the book "Evidence that Demands a Verdict" by Josh McDowell (mentioned on page 113). The approach is much the same. Questions are posed concerning the claims of Christianity vs. Islam, and evidence is called for both, and a conclusion is reached. What made this book worth reading for me was the comparison of the basics of Islam with Christianity. For example, I've tried to read the Quran and it seems like a mass of fragmentary thought with no narrative, and Dr. Qureshi enlightened me as to why. The chapter comparing Sharia and the Gospel was quite eye-opening for me, and the account of when Dr. Qureshi's friend (page 135) affirmed over dinner that he would kill Dr. Qureshi "right now" was downright chilling. And there more, much more. But to me the enlightenment I received with respect toward Islam was offset by the dumming down of Christianty.Dr. Qureshi (whose "doctor" title comes from his MD, not his three religion related masters degrees) seems to have issues with basic Christology.Right from the get-go I knew things were going to be a bit weird. Dr. Qureshi writes on page 13, 'Both Islam and Christianity are monotheistic, believing there is "no God but one," but they differ fundamentally on who and what God is: Allah or Jesus.'Well, that explains why the title of this book seemed so strange, and it also shows a basic disconnect between Dr. Qureshi and orthodox Christianity, not to mention the very text he quotes in this sentence. The phrase "no God but one" appears once in scripture in 1 Cor 8:4: "...there is no such thing as an idol in the world, and that there is no God but one." Two verses later Paul writes who that God is, "yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him."The Nicene Creed begins with "We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty..." and goes on to describe Jesus as the "only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, light from Light..." But that Jesus doesn't seem "god" enough for Dr. Qureshi.Dr. Qureshi writes on page 26 that the "basic Christian axiom 'Jesus is God' registers as blasphemy to the average Muslim." Well, it isn't "blasphemy" to me, but when did "Jesus is God" become a "basic Christian axiom?" The phrase is nowhere in scripture."Jesus is God" appears three times in all thirty volumes of the Church Fathers (that famous set by Philip Schaff that all bible students should be familiar with). One time is in St. Augustine "Homilies on the Gospel of John" where Augustine writes, "Hence we say that the Lord Jesus is God of God: we do not say that the Father is God of God, but simply God."(St. Augustine also wrote that the "one God" is the Trinity several times in his book "On the Holy Trinity," which I have read.)The second time is in Theodoret's fictional dialogue between Orthodoxos and Eranistes where Eranistes asks if "Jesus is God only" but is corrected by Orthodoxos who explains that Jesus is God and Man (meaning two natures). The third time, and the only time "Jesus is God" appears in the Church Fathers as an independent clause, is in the writings of Sulpitius Severus, where he is advocating the doctrine of Mary as the Mother of God.So, hardly enough evidence that "Jesus is God" was a "basic Christian axiom."But it apparently isn't enough to create a "basic Christian axiom" that never was, Dr. Qureshi has to go and put words right in Jesus' mouth that he never said. It's not enough to say "Jesus is God" based on interpretations of scriptures, Jesus must actually be made to say, by whatever means necessary, that He is God.Dr. Qureshi could have saved a lot of time by pasting in Pastor Mark Driscoll's sermon "Is Jesus the Only God" from 2006. This can be easliy seen on YouTube and follows the same thought process.Ironically, forcing the idea that Jesus "claimed to be God" is also in Josh McDowell's "Evidence that Demands a Verdict" (I'm staring at my autographed copy right now) where on page 95 McDowell does essentially what Driscoll and Dr. Qureshi have done, only way back in 1972.One of the basic guiding principles of the 1st century church, as recorded in Acts 15 (my interpretation) is to make things as easy as possible for people of different belief systems to become Christians. That's what the Jewish Christians did for the Gentiles. So, how about cutting the Muslims a little slack on the trinitarianism, and especially the dumbed down "Jesus is God" sloganized version popular today and let them become 1st century Christians? How about going from "There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is his messenger." to "yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him." (1 Cor 8:6)There's a parallel kind of symmetry there, and we're still monotheistic. It's way easier than going all the way to "Jesus is God," which isn't in scripture, and in fact Jesus never did claim (say explicitly from his mouth) to be "God."Ironically, Dr. Qureshi knows how confusing the Trinity is for Muslims. He writes as much on page 14 in the preface. In this book, Dr. Qureshi made it easier for me, a Christian, to understand Islam, but I'm not so sure he made Christianity easier for Muslims to understand.

As a former athiest, this book was absolutely refreshing. If you enjoy historical, objective, and accurate evidence that provides reasons for faith and support to the claims of Christianity -- then this book will be one you enjoy. Qureshi shares his personal story about his journey from Muslim to Christian, but does it from the chair of an objective observer/investigator.This book provides compare/contrast of Islam to Christianity, and does a fine job of it. Even as a believer I would venture to say you will add to your faith in Jesus Christ. There are several quality points that I would recommend any believer should know when befriending a Muslim. As Qureshi states in his testimony, a strong relationship is very important when dealing with the weight of religion and eternal life. There are many suggestions throughout this book on how to handle yourself and avoid offending your Muslim friends. You won't be disappointed in this purchase. I received this book as part of the launch team in return giving my honest review. I enjoyed this book enough to purchase 10 more to give to others!

Most books on the subject of Islam vs Christianity are written either by loyal Muslims seeking to discredit Christianity, or committed Christians determined to undermine Islam. Few come from authors with real understanding of the nuances of the two religions, and fewer still from those with experience as believers of both faiths.Nabeel Qureshi is a rarity among those who write about Islam and Christianity -- a former Islam apologist who, through an intense spiritual struggle, became a Christian apologist. Though there is no such thing as a completely objective author, Qureshi is better equipped than most to analyze the history and doctrines of both of Islam and Christianity. In his own words “I do not claim to be unbiased, but I have been on both sides of the debate.”The book compares the worldviews and foundational beliefs of the two religions, including their founding, the character and lives of Muhammad and Jesus, origin and reliability of the respective scriptures, teachings regarding the nature of God and man, and the respective doctrines of paradise/heaven. The sequence of topics is both logical and follows the order in which the author reluctantly abandoned his lifelong belief in Islam. For each topic, Qureshi presents the teaching of Islam and evidence offered as proof, the comparable teaching and evidence of Christianity, then conclusions deemed reasonable to an objective observer.Although this volume covers many points familiar to those who have studied Islam, or Islam vs Christianity, it also contains some specifics not usually found in mid-length (300 pages) works on this subject. Examples include these assertions:- The status of the Quran in Islam is more similar to the status of Jesus than to that of the Bible in Christianity.- The doctrine of tawhid (oneness of Allah) is not found in the Quran, but was developed over centuries. Divergent opinions regarding this key doctrine were suppressed during an Islamic period of inquisition, but still persist today.- The canonical Quran was defined long after Muhammad’s death and without universal agreement, including still existent debate regarding its correct content and its eternality. This book is recommended for those interested in comparative religions, particularly Islam vs Christianity. However, as the author states “I often come across two kinds of people: Christians who enjoy criticizing Islam, and Muslims who want to argue but do not want to learn. I am not writing this book for either of them.” Written by a former Muslim out of love for those who follow Islam, this book will prove most valuable to those who are open to or seeking a well-reasoned examination of the key issues that confront both faiths.
