Entering the Castle: An Inner Path to God and Your Soul, by Caroline Myss

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Fans of Myss's earlier books (Sacred Contracts, etc.), which drew inspiration from such diverse traditions as Indian medicine and ancient divination methods, may be surprised at how thoroughly entrenched her new book is in the Western religious tradition. In the preface, she discusses how an out-of-the blue seizure and a midlife hunger for an authentic spiritual practice set her exploring the mystical tradition of her childhood Catholic faith. Using St. Teresa of Ávila's metaphor of the "interior castle" as a template, Myss challenges readers to get in touch with their own souls and shows how they can then lead deeper, more joyous lives. Every chapter is packed with meditations that help to either clean out the detritus that prevents spiritual growth or prepare for a mystical meeting with God. Interspersed are supportive stories of those who have gone before on the path. While Myss explicitly states that readers need not become Catholic or even Christian to enter the castle, some may be turned off by how little she incorporates other traditions. Even so, the material clearly springs from a deeply personal place and every page rings with the passion and intensity of someone who has finally found what she was seeking. If you are serious about getting get in touch with your soul to have a deeper, closer relationship with God, BUY THIS BOOK. Read a little at a time to digest the rich introspective thoughts and the formative exercises to plumb the depths of your soul. Gradually over time, you will see a change in your life, your perspective, and perhaps find out what you are to do with your life. This book, based on St. Teresa of Avila's Interior Castle, is written for the everyday person in today's world. It is easy to read and understand. This book is an inspired masterpiece and is ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I'VE EVER READ. This book opens your eyes and helps you gain insight, increasing your awareness of God and how God works in your life. You must be sincere, humble, and committed to finding out who you are and what you are to do with your life to undertake the spiritual exercises in this book. You will learn to be honest with yourself and how to connect with your soul as your moral compass. I have changed and the direction of my life has changed as a result of reading and following the soul work in this book. A word of caution, the profound changes that you will make in your life as you enter the "castle" of your soul are fraught with a lot of challenges that will require perseverance. But you will reach new heights and learn much to cope with ambiguities in life to find your path to God.

As a person who has been on a serious spiritual path for many years, this book has been life changing for me. Caroline Myss does for Teresa of Avila's "Interior Castle" what Marianne Williamson has done for "A Course in Miracles". The practices for deep prayer are insightful and practical as well as sacred. I am on my sixth time through it since I picked it up in Nov 2014 after my brother died. It is an essential book for me, kept permanently on my reading table.

I gave Entering the Castle, by Caroline Myss, five stars because of what I have gotten out of it. For a little more than the last year, I have been studying A Course In Miracles (ACIM) which is quite challenging by itself. However, I see Entering the Castle as another vehicle for uncovering layers of my past "stuff" in a perhaps easier way. Her descriptions of reptiles and drawbridges and the castle help to make the process of lightening burdens of the soul interesting and inviting which is no easy task. She bases her writing on ideas that came from St Theresa of Avila, which is intriguing. With each writing exercise, I have been pleasantly surprised at new discoveries about myself, even after years and years of writing and praying. I highly recommend this book to anyone willing and courageous enough to dig deep into the bowels of his or her castle to reap great rewards.

This book does take a while to get into it, this is true. And it is not just for Catholics it is for a Christian or one on a spiritual journey to understand what the castle experience is all about. Once I began this book, it was hard to put it down. Each day, I looked forward to reading this book to completion. Each chapter caused me to yearn for more as I loved going to each part of the castle to the different levels. What a spiritual journey this book is!What I also found helpful was I ordered the CD audio (abridged) book for Entering The Castle and loved this one so much I downloaded it to my MP3 player and listen to it often. You can also find on Amazon the unabridged version of Entering The Castle CD and the audiobook as well. For me, I found the abridged one online at a low cost and it is not as long as the unabridged (lecture) one.For those who find this this book is rather long, may I suggest the CD for Entering the Castle. It is so easy to listen to the the abridged book this way.

The past decade has led me to undertake deep and intense soul work. I found the door to my inner castle through both Teresa of Avila and the masterful writing of Caroline Myss, a true mystic without a monastery. It takes brutal honesty and a sincere heartfelt desire to enter the Castle and visit its many rooms. Self-refection defeats self-deception. This is NOT a new-agey book(five steps to complete spirituality). It is worth the time, the effort, and dedication to commit to and complete all the mansions and its multiple rooms.I feel invigorated, humble, joyful and delighted in life! My connection of my soul to God? Mystical, infinite, sacred, clear and loving.

What a wonderful book that I will use for the rest of my time here on earth. There are so my insights in this book. I can be still because I know God is with me. And the Kindom of God is here, it is within us.

This book is one of my personal favorites in consciousness expansion and spiritual/personal evolution. I have both the book and the cds, and I especially love the cds, as Caroline leads you through meditations based on Teresa of Ávila's work. I've had amazing shifts in consciousness as a result....but, not just from reading the book. You have to do the work of "entering the castle" consistently. But, if you are willing to make the effort, the depth of the awakening process and personal exploration that this system can open you to can be quite profound.

A rigorous guidebook for the contemporary mystic. I've been working with this book for years now. It is absolutely invaluable. You can read it straight through or open it up at any point and you will not fail to be moved and enlightened. It's an incredible combination of classic Catholic mystical practices and contemporary wisdom - a marriage between St. Teresa of Avila and Caroline Myss. Love it. A must read for any contemporary contemplative or spiritual seeker.

Grade 7 Up-The articles in this volume cover events, people, documents, legal cases, and social and political movements and groups that have had an impact on our country since the end of World War II. The alphabetical entries range from one paragraph to four pages, with most under one page. Biographical articles are prefaced with mention of significant dates in the subject's life and, often, a list of accomplishments. See-also references and a short list for further reading conclude most entries. Like the other titles in this series, the attractively designed pages are formatted in two columns with generous margins. Black-and-white photographs with informative captions appear on almost every double-page spread. A chronology is followed by a three-page bibliography that includes some of the same references given with the articles and others that are more general in scope. Although there are some omissions in the index and see-also references, researchers will be able to locate the information they need and navigate comfortably. The unbiased articles will clarify concepts and help students understand this period of our history.Priscilla Bennett, State University of West Georgia, Carrollton Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

I have read almost all of Dr. Fukuyama's books and recommended several of them to friends and associates. I looked forward for months the publication of "Identity." Ultimately I found it unsatisfactory. On a positive note Dr. Fukuyama's ability to set context once again is a strong foundation. He starts with the Greeks and works his way to the present. His description of the evolution of thought is an education by itself. (Not to mention that anyone who has read "Snow Crash " gets a special place in my heart.) Rather than, as most reviewers do, give you a synopsis (I will leave that to others) I will focus on my misgivings.1. A central theme is the human need to be valued. This need to be valued is intrinsic. But there is a difference between being valued and narcissism. Dr. Fukuyama does not help me understand where valuing you when you are deluded about your self worth plays into a creedal society.2. Dr. Fukuyama speaks about diversity in traditional liberal (as in leftist) terms - race, creed, gender, etc. What was missing for me was the value of "diversity." Will I somehow be a better person and citizen if I have to read 100 illiterate and meaningless authors to tick the diversity box before I can read a second Fukuyama? I wholeheartedly disagree that meaningless prattle becomes inherently meaningful because of the race, religion, gender, national origin or learned experience of the author. I would have expected Dr. Fukuyama to rail against such identities but he does not.3. Dr. Fukuyama speaks to inequality of economic success and appears to favor redistribution. This flies in the face of, and stomps heavily on, the concept of property rights - a fundamental attribute of the U.S. Constitution. It does not matter to me if it is a King, a dictator, or a "liberal democracy" when they appropriate my private property for some egalitarian "public good" I am going to resent those who benefit from the fruits of my labor. The governmentization of private charity has turned a positive social good into a negative evil. This area is not addressed as part of the fracture of society into interest groups.4. Dr. Fukuyama does not discuss merit other than in the context of the earliest warrior class except to note that the general population seems to have substituted vacuous celebrity for the prior principles of honor, service and sacrifice. If everyone is self-actualizing their self aggrandizement why is this surprising? We have a old fashioned word for this: selfish.4. Finally a note about President Trump. Given Dr. Fukuyama's public dislike for the President I expected him to go off the deep end as has Stephen Pinker ("Enlightenment Now".) He does not. But where I hoped for more insight was in "the road not taken." Most of us (projecting the Universe (Multiverse) from a sample of one) are not engaged on a daily basis with the arc of history. My favorite analogy for political action is a pendulum. As an issue swings to an extreme more and more people are driven from their lethargy and become active participants. But the pendulum has to swing. Both Dr. Fukuyama and Michael Porter ("Competitive Advantage") point to the negative impact of the continuation of policies and institutions that have long outlived their usefulness. President Trump is a disruptor of the status quo. Both Dr. Fukuyama and I agree that the status quo seems to be in the direction of a retreat of liberal democracy. Maybe a little disruption is a good thing. Which is not to suggest that I approve of the President's antics. On a personal note: I am retired and live alone on a sailboat. I have spent the last 9 years traveling all over the world. I have immense personal time and usually spend 3 to 4 hours a day reading and taking online courses during which time I am required to pet my very demanding cat XO. I find that the descriptions of the "right" are totally foreign to my personal experience of people in the United States. I don't identify with the "right" as described nor do I identify with the "left." I honestly don't know who these people are. In a multidimensional space we need more than a linear description.*(new) According to Gallup in 2017 42% of Americans identified as "Independent", 29% as Democrats, 27% as Republicans. So what are "Independents?" Left, Right, Up, Down, Charmed, Strange? (Inside joke for quantum theory proponents.) Their viewpoint appears to be ignored by Dr. Fukuyama. Yet they are the plurality of Americans.***********************************Update September 30, 2018 (with minor updates to the above for clarity)Having read "Identity" for a second time and other's reviews I have finally realized what has been really bothering me. The "story" falls flat. The final chapter is a bromide of "what should be." There is no "getting to Denmark." It is clear to me (but apparently not Dr. Fukuyama) that the 4th Estate is both a significant cause of identity politics and a possible positive force for creating a more creedal society. Their daily broadside of identity politics validates those who would see the society fractured into smaller and smaller interest groups. This may get "clicks" but is detrimental to society as a whole. How does one convince them to change their behavior?Dr. Fukuyama speaks to a number of potential policy changes that in his opinion could move us in the right direction. But policy change requires elucidation of the rationale and persuasion of the need for change. The "Federalist Papers" weren't written because the Founders had a lot of spare time. (Equal time - nor were the Anti-Federalist Papers.)My three star rating should not imply that reading this book is an unworthy use of time. (I have, for example, read it twice so far.) I had just hoped for more.January 8, 2019. I just discovered that my android view has no button to link to comments. I happened to view this review on my desktop and have responded to some questions. My apologies.

In Identity: The Demand for Dignity and the Politics of Resentment, Stanford political scientist Francis Fukuyama presents an impressively well-reasoned and lucid explanation of the phenomenon of identity politics, which is being increasingly recognized as a powerful force within the United States and world-wide. Although he acknowledges in the Preface that the 2016 U S presidential election was the inspiration for the book, Identity goes far beyond an analysis of the last election or similar phenomena like the Brexit vote. The scope of the book is summed up well in the aptly-chosen subtitle: The Demand for Dignity and the Politics of Resentment. Fukuyama is a scholar and deep thinker, and he traces the origins of identity politics back to its roots both historical and psychological. As he explains it, identity politics begins with thymos, a basic human desire for dignity and recognition of an individual’s worth, which creates resentment if an individual feels disrespected. The modern concept of identity has changed over the past few centuries, though, under the influence of thinkers like Martin Luther, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and others. As society has become modern and complex, people have felt their identities more repressed and value their inner selves more. And as modern society has developed, people increasingly began to believe that dignity is something that all people deserve, and not just a narrow class. When large numbers of people sense they are not being accorded that dignity, various forms of unrest develop. Some are positive and productive, and some are not, and Fukuyama presents a number of excellent examples, such as the Arab Spring that was touched off when a Tunisian policewoman slapped a street vendor. If people cannot feel respected for themselves alone, they can look for respect by virtue of membership in a group, be it ethnic, religious, or class, and it is this push for respect by virtue of group identity that is being noted in many ways today, whether it is the tribal antipathies in Africa, anti-immigrant feelings in many countries, or requests for ethnic-focused dorms on college campuses. Although we tend to note negative results of people’s quest for dignity and respect, Fukuyama says “that the demand for dignity should somehow disappear is neither possible nor desirable”. Ultimately, if I may oversimplify a much more sophisticated conclusion, Fukuyama calls for a broadening of the sense of identity based on a commitment to liberal democratic principles as a solution to many ills.Identity is definitely the best non-fiction book I have read in a very long time. It is disturbing, enlightening, and convincing; to me it also appeared very objective if approached with an open mind, although I suspect it will offend hardliners in both the liberal and conservative camps. His thesis is sophisticated, but the book is very readable, and his ultimate conclusion is positive: “Identity can be used to divide, but it can and has also been used to integrate. That in the end will be the remedy for the populist politics of the present.”My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for an advance review copy of this book.

As an acknowledged “middle aged white guy” who has been been trying to better understand “the race” issue through self reflection, reading material written by other who don’t look like me or have wildly different understanding of the American experience, I found this book to be insightful and likely to ruffle the feathers of the far left and far right. I think the author has a historically solid foundation for his work and provides excellent insight about how dignity and identify are impacting our politics and likely to impact the future if not managed well. Well worth my time and money.

Facts, sound arguments, detailed evidence, solution focused, fair and balanced. Brilliant! Can't tell if the author is "left" or "right". What is clear is that he is interested in the good of the whole, understands left and right limits, and is a true American in the truest sense of the word.

Review

"Finalist for the 2011 Lane Anderson Award, Fitzhenry Family Foundation""One of Choice's Outstanding Academic Titles for 2011""One of Library Journal's Best Sci-Tech Books for 2011""Anyone scanning the shelves today to learn about such urgent news from the universe should go directly to 'J' and take down Ray Jayawardhana's Strange New Worlds. It begins with early speculation by ancient thinkers but moves quickly to a series of seemingly promising discoveries, beginning 160 years ago, that raised researchers' hopes only to frustrate them. . . . [R]eading Strange New Worlds, I felt the thrill of briefly sharing in the efforts of these planet-seeking scientists and seeing the universe through their eyes."---Mike Brown, Wall Street Journal"He takes the reader on a four-century-long scientific quest to discover our place in the universe, beginning with the Copernican hypothesis and Galileo's discovery of four of Jupiter's planets. . . . An exciting, highly readable glimpse into a discovery that could have broad scientific and cultural implications." (PublishersWeekly.com)"In Strange New Worlds, astronomer and one-time journalist Ray Jayawardhana surveys how 15 years of exoplanet discovery has changed astrophysics. . . . Jayawardhana's presentation of the research is remarkably even-handed. This is a fast-moving field in which groups have often clashed. Nonetheless, he provides a survey of the subject without giving the protagonists anything to complain about. His lucid and effortless prose makes for an engaging read."---Chris Tinney, Nature"Engaging." (Science News)"With the seemingly endless stream of news about discoveries of alien planets, it's easy to forget that just 20 years ago exoplanets were no more than theoretical possibilities. Now astronomer Ray Jayawardhana tells the story of how the dramatic hunt has unfolded, from the early days of stellar astronomy to present-day speculation about life outside our solar system." (New Scientist)"Professor Jayawardhana is an award-winning science writer and an eminent planet-hunter, and so is the perfect person to write an accessible guidebook to the new worlds we're discovering in our galaxy. He explains how many of those discovered so far are pretty exotic, bloated and massive or scorchingly close to their sun, and how we've even had our first weather report for another world. But what's most exciting is that this book explains how we now have within our grasp the ability to spot a true twin of Earth." (BBC Focus)"This combination of the insider's expert perspective and storyteller's skill really shines through in Strange New Worlds. . . . [Y]ou won't find a more able guide for the journey."---Lewis Dartnell, Times Higher Education

From the Back Cover

"Jayawardhana's small book is a gem. It brings readers up to date on the rapidly progressing quest for exoplanets and their potential inhabitants, and also interweaves the very human details about the people behind these discoveries. Read this book if you want a picture of how modern astronomy and astrobiology are helping to calibrate our place in the universe. A most delightful read."--Jill Tarter, director of the Center for SETI Research"Jayawardhana brings the latest cutting-edge science to all those astounding science-fictional visions of alien worlds, showing us that the universe is every bit as exciting as the masters of science fiction have always claimed. It's no accident that his title invokes the opening of the original Star Trek. In this terrific book, he boldly goes out into the galaxy, showing us strange--and wondrous--new worlds."--Robert J. Sawyer, Hugo Award-winning author of Wake, Watch, and Wonder"If you have ever wanted to know how astronomers are going to find an Earth-like planet, this engaging book explains it all. Not only is Strange New Worlds fantastic storytelling about the checkered and dramatic history of exoplanet discovery, but it also gives a compelling description of the path to future discoveries."--Sara Seager, author of Exoplanet Atmospheres"Strange New Worlds is a very satisfying book that does a thorough and excellent job of tracing the discovery and characterization of extrasolar planets. It is the only popular-level book that gives full, up-to-date, and in-depth coverage of one of the most exciting and fast-moving fields of scientific research."--Greg Laughlin, coauthor of The Five Ages of the Universe: Inside the Physics of Eternity"This is quite a good book. Its greatest strengths are the clarity of the writing; the thorough, technically accurate, and very up-to-date coverage of the material; and of course the fascinating topics the author presents."--Edwin L. Turner, Princeton University

A tight survey of exoplanet discoveries from the last few decades. I particularly enjoyed the personal and historical anecdotes scattered throughout. This book compares favorably to Boss's _The Crowded Universe_ -- where Boss dives into the sausage-making and politics of modern astronomy, Jayawardhana covers more scientific ground, providing a more thorough explanation of, for example, exoplanet discovery techniques. The book suffers a little for not having a strong overall narrative thread, and it's a shame it came out before Kepler since that mission has totally revolutionized exoplanets. But _Strange New Worlds_ is a good review of exoplanet science pre-Kepler.

The material the book is based on is of course, dated. But it does give you the basics of the history, the advances in techno!ogy, and of the nascent subject. The only bad thing, knocking one star off rating, was the horrible pick of the Audible people to read this work. There were times when I thought I was hearing the soft tones of a parent reading a copy of winnie-the-pooh. And a parent who was terribly bored and incipient in time of voice. Don't be a fool like me and pop for the Audible extra.

A very readable history of the search for planets around stars other than our own. The reader will learn a lot of astronomy in a very engaging text. It will also give you an insiders look at the rough and tumble world of financing science in the 21st century. There are lots of stories also about false starts, which is the way all science is done. Even claims that are refuted later push science forward and there are plenty of examples here. A great review of the very ingenious ways of getting at the quest for planets. I would recommend this book as a text in an introductory course on planetary geology or as an interesting read for those that are science savy.

A little dated, but with respect to how fast this area of Astrophysics is moving, a good overview

This book is one of the better science books I have read in a long time it is concise, interesting and very easy to read and comprehend.I will definitely read other books by this author.

Very interesting, hope the search goes on, shows a lot of advancement in science, I have an app for extra solar planets.

Strange New Worlds - Ray Jayawardhana [2014-03-07 512] The search for an earth-like planet orbiting a star in the goldilocks zone is the ultimate goal of many astronomers. This quest has also captured the imagination of many laymen. The author does a commendable job of setting the parameters of just what an earth-like planet is and spelling out the less than obvious fact that a body too close to a star or too far would not support life as we know it - think Mercury and Jupiter - hence the term goldilocks zone. This book details the historical investigations, and missteps, of detecting planets and more importantly just how these incredibly distant objects are identified and observed. Author Ray Jayawardhana is not only an excellent science writer but is also a "world leader in the study of planetary origins and diversity" to quote his bio on the back cover of this commendable book. The usefulness of this book in enhanced by the inclusion of a glossary of scientific terms, a bibliography, an index and many helpful drawings and illustrations. Highly recommended for curious students of all ages.

After departing on the day of her husband's wedding to his second wife she returns to England to find she is pregnant. She gets a job as a doctor but as a single parent things aren't going too well. Her 9 year old son gets into fights at school because of the lack of the father in the home until one day his father comes to visit and then he's mad because he hadn't come before now. Father spends time with them but his visa expires and is not renewed so he has to return witho.ut his family but soon they follow

Great reading for down time. They has misunderstanding but in the end love conquerors all. Just great th o read

So not worth it. The story completely skips at of the story. When reading it jumps from one country to another with no story on what happened n between. What happened after he got married to second wife. To much confusion.

Boy oh boy!Lotsa smooching going on here! Considering that the guy's a Sheikh and all, she'd better give it up or he'll have her stoned or beheaded. Its what they do, right? You don't really want to tick those guys off, if you know what I mean. The story makes it look like the "Sheikh" is some kinda mysterious middle-eastern dude, but he was really born in upstate New York. His dad was a mechanic for a Ford dealership and his mom waited tables at the 'Yankee Bell Cafe', not to say that's a bad thing cuz she was really good at it and she cleaned up on tips. Easily forty-fifty bucks a night! Enough to send her son to Sheikh school at nights.Buy it, you'll like it... if you can get past the Sheikh-stuff.

I have 2 stars for the details of the Middle East. The story line is anticlimactic. Lots of potential with disappointing results.
