This translation of the Bhagavad-Gita reveals that the teachings of the Gita are not the teachings of a particular religion, but of a purely non-sectarian spiritual science. Guided by his friend Krishna, Arjuna struggles with the big questions of life, as well as how to deal with the heart-rending task at hand: facing-off with relatives, friends, and teachers on the battlefield of Kurukshetra (which, today, is a city in the state of Haryana in India). It is a guide for living, and revelation of the nature of the universe, the soul, and most importantly the soul’s relationship with the Supreme Soul, as Dr. Schweig states in his introduction: “…..Indeed, this divine intimacy is revealed in the form of a dialogue that takes the soul on an inward journey culminating in the ultimate state of yoga, in which souls unite with the heart of God.”There are many translations of this 5,000 year old Sanskrit text and many of them have been edited down, or not translated literally, and I have found that those translations leave Krishna’s teachings a bit murky, but, Dr. Schweig’s translation is a literal translation from the original Sanskrit, thoroughly poetic, and clearly remains true to the original message of the Gita in every chapter, verse and word.

Having been a student of the Bhagavad Gita for many years now, I have read several translations and commentaries, both academic and traditional. Dr. Schweig's has struck me as deeply illuminating. While a work of rigorous scholarship it remains philosophically engaging and eminently readable. It stands out to me for its keen awareness of Krishna's original intent. Dr. Schweig expertly brings out the layers of sanskrit poetry and meaning, condensed into this ancient dialogue, unlike any other translator. I especially recommend that every reader pay close attention to his Textual Illuminations section that upon first reading, many years ago, moved me to tears. I now carry his translation with me on my kindle everywhere I travel.

Good teachers simplify the teachings so that the student can easily grasp the sacred teachings. This author does that. We were fortunate enough to have him visit our school and teach us for two days. He was able to lead us through the verses, translation and philosophy with rhythm, grace, knowledge and devotion. He was able to apply what Krishna was teaching Arjuna to conflicts we could battle today - present! Highly recommend this author and can't wait for his next translation to be published of another classical text that he could be working on.....

As a professor of religion, I have read many versions of the Gita and have assigned several of them to my classes. This translation is by far the best. I first read this translation while on a houseboat on the Keralan backwaters with the sounds of jungle temples floating across the waters, but rereading it several times hasn't dampened my initial love of the text. The translation is always accessible, yet includes the key Hindu terms with excellent concise notes that help introductory students understand the text at a deeper level, or at least understand that there are layers of meaning playing out through the text. The critical essays are also excellent. While there are some translations that are more explanatory or conversational, this translation carries the sense of gravity, inquiry and the sublime that is at the heart of the Bhagavad Gita. The critical essays are also excellent.

In addition to an excellent translation, Schweig offers some very helpful tools for fully and fruitfully entering the text including a unique introduction, a dramatis personae, a chronological list of appellations for Lord Krishna and Arjuna, literary essays, an expansive bibliography and more. If you are new to the Bhagavad Gita or a lifelong student, there is something for you in Dr. Schweig's latest offering.

Let me start by saying this is the first full version of the Bhagavad Gita that I've ever read, so I can't make any comparisons to other translations. I have read many quotes from the text, but this is the first time I've read the whole Gita beginning to end. That being said, this translation & brief commentary by Graham Schweig is phenomenal!I liken reading the Bhagavad Gita to reading Shakespeare - the text is rich with meaning, though it may be tough to grasp without extra insight. Schweig does a great job of providing a little bit of guidance while you let the text speak for itself. The final appendix, titled "On This Translation", explains Schweig's means of translating the ancient text & I highly appreciate how he did everything he could to maintain the text's integrity & complexity when presenting it in English.Having studied & practiced many of yoga's core concepts, reading the Gita is a natural extension of delving deeper into the world of yoga. The Gita adds a much richer concept of what yoga is, compared to just reading the Yoga Sutras.Whether you've had an introduction to yoga or not, Schweig does a wonderful job making the Gita understandable - and you'll likely be even more curious about yoga afterward! I can easily see myself reading & referring to this translation for many decadesNote: The Gita is a beautiful book for folks of all faiths to read, whether they consider themselves yogis or not. If you have devoted yourself to a particular religion or faith, keep an open mind when you read this book. Krishna, who is the highest God in the Hindu religion, can easily be seen as the God you have chosen to worship. Each religion has their own version of "the highest power", but more often than not, they are preaching the same message: love one another & leave the Earth better than you found it.

This is by far one of the best editions of the Gita that I have ever read. Schweig's translation is a timeless masterpiece that will touch the hearts of many for years to come.

I really loved the accounting of a brand new way of life for Jared, the author, and C J. It was exciting to hear about all the ups and downs of them learning how to care for olive trees. The many stories of how they learned to raise chickens and pigs and all their wonderful helping neighbors were sometimes hilarious and sometimes very sad. What a terrific story of life on a farm in New Zealand. I would recommend this and the sequel to everyone to enjoy.I'm now buying the paperback edition to give as gifts - sharing the fun !

This a lovely book of short stories about two people who turn their own world inside out and upside down all because a hunch. The narrative is romantic ( in an 18th cent sense) and the prose is sometimes as evocative as poetry but my favorite parts are the quirky characters and self-effacing humor and animal stories. I have not enjoy rural tales this much since I discoverEd James Herriot 40 years ago. What a pleasure!

Loved it. Lying on the beach of an idyllic resort in Western Samoa we are carried to the fertile plains of Wairarapa New Zealand and caught up in the daily adventures of two American "townies" learning to do things "rural" - the New Zealand way . With a gutsy "lets give it a go" attitude that warms our hearts and cheers up our day, Jared and CJ open up their lives to show us what awesome things can be done with just a little spunk, a sense of humour and a readiness to laugh at ourselves.....

This was on an LGBT website as a recommended book. It’s charming, and well written, but other than the cover mentioning “two American city boys”, you’d never know that the author and CJ were 2 gay men. I guess that’s progress, but truthfully I wouldn’t have picked this book up if not for the LGBT angle. So while I’d give the book 4 1/2 stars if I could, I felt slightly let down, as I expected more of a Beekman Boys type vibe.

These are delightful shared memories! I laughed - out loud - so many times while reading this book; when I put it down, I couldn't wait to get back to it! Jared does, though, pull at your heart-strings both ways, as there are, also, many 'touching' moments in the boys' experiences and adventures,. Keep the stories coming and continue amusing us, Jared; your penchant for writing shows in technique and humor. God has given you a gift. I recommend this book; you will smile again and again!

This is a delightful story about two American men, city born and bred, who settle in a small town near Wellington, New Zealand and come to terms with being the proud parents of a grove of 500 demanding olive trees, to say nothing g of a bunch of chickens, a pig, and other interesting animals. Jared is to be complimented on telling his story with charm and tact and good humour, all the while keeping the reader's interest in the doings of himself and his partner along with a group of fascinating neighbours. Bravo!

There is not anything negative to say about this fabulous read! It is so tender and good humored, it makes you envious to not be a part of this community! I have wanted to travel to New Zealand, for the longest time, and this just gives me hope that it is as beautiful as I imagine it to be!I am on my last 40 pages, and I already miss the people(and animals), that I have spent the last few days becoming acquainted with. This is such a beautiful unwinding of events, and so delightful to read, I highly reccomend it to anybody who desires to get lost in the pages of a really good book!

A very enjoyable read--entertaining and the writing flows well. Refreshing to read stories that are uplifting and funny. I read this book to get a sense of what people who live in New Zealand are like--language, lifestyle, etc.--from a USA point of view. The writing did transport me to the New Zealand people and culture. I am visiting NZ in February 2017 and the stories in the book did give me a sense of a down-to-earth, warm and friendly culture. I am really looking forward to my visit and meeting the people of New Zealand after reading this book.

To Caress the Air: Augustus Herring and the Dawn of Flight. Book One, by C. David Gierke

Review

Gierke worked on this book for seven years, and his readers will berewarded with minute detail as a result! It is one of the most thoroughlyresearched biographies I have ever read. There are three parallelstorylines: the biography of Augustus Herring, the proceedings of a courtcase about a bankruptcy where Herring is the plaintiff, and thetechnological development race at the end of the nineteenth century formoving from gliders to motorized flight. The central figure in all of this is A.M. Herring (1867-1926), a giftedtechnician with a passion for aircraft development, but with a difficultcharacter and little talent for business. In short, he possessed the skillsto conceive sometimes-brilliant ideas, but lacked the ability to get themrealized in real life, the exact opposite of the skill set of the Wrightbrothers that resulted in their success. What appealed most to me in this book was the detailed account of theproblems that had to be overcome along the road to manned flight, both withgliders and motorized aircraft. In particular the move from steam tocombustion engines is a fascinating story. What is interesting is that theknow-how both how to fly a glider (Otto Lilienthal), and how to builda combustion engine (Gottlieb Daimler), was developed in Germany, but itwas in the USA, the country of unlimited opportunities, that theseinnovations were realized to their full potential!Reading this book requires making choices: focusing on the life of Herring,or more specifically on the development of manned flight. I alreadyindicated that my choice was for the latter. The detailed exploration ofthe question whether a plane should have inherent stability, or if thedaredevil who wants to conquer the sky should have total control over hisplane himself, has long divided the people who tried to solve it. Herringwas one of the pioneers who believed in the active control of a mannedflying machine. Unfortunately for him the lack of moral and financialsupport caused him to bite the dust (literally) in sight of the finish! - JorisGonggrijp, (Netherlands), AviationBookReviews.com"The book puts a bomb under the success of the Wright Brothers, because wasit Herring or the Wright Brothers that created the base for flying heavierthan air? David Gierke's book lifts the curtain." - Max Heldring,(Netherlands), AviationBookReviews.comGierke worked on this book for seven years, and his readers will berewarded with minute detail as a result! It is one of the most thoroughlyresearched biographies I have ever read. The book combines contributions from several other early experimenters...with interesting aircraft development history...geography and period history tossed in.  Should the book become the basis for a movie, I'll be in the audience."  - Bob Angel, Model Aviation."The truth may finally be coming to the surface! Fascinating book based on state Supreme Court documentation. But, there seems to be some politics creeping in. Makes you wonder who the first to fly a man-carrying motorized airplane really was?  Can't wait for Book Two! Here is another troubling thing in my mind...the Wright Brothers claimed "controlled flight". What is the opposite of controlled flight... uncontrolled flight and crashing?  Herring had controlled flight with body shifting and his regulator... he was too often the subject of "word-manipulation" by Chanute, and I now have a totally different opinion of Chanute...there is a closed base AFB in Illinois with his name attached, much now to my chagrin." - Paul F. Geders, Senior Supportability Specialist (Retired), The Boeing Co.After having read books 1 & 2 of C. David Gierke's Biographical Novel "To Caress the Air",  I'm convinced that Augustus Herring was the first man to pilot a heavier than air craft propelled from the ground against the prevailing wind and without losing altitude. If that's not flying I don't know what is! There are those who belittle his feat because he used a compressed air motor as his power plant and used weight shifting as his control. To the contrary, I believe that those methods make his accomplishment even more remarkable. The available flight time offered by a very limited amount of pressurized air made it imperative that he not waste any of it in start-up and take-off as not would be the case if he had used a gasoline engine. Furthermore, isn't weight shifting the most obvious method that one would desire to use for flight as opposed to operating a bunch of levers. Don't you recall that when you were a child pretending to fly that you would spread out your arms and rock back and forth in exactly that manner?  That Herring was a genius is apparent by his display of knowledge concerning all aspects of engineering- design, construction, experimentation, modeling, testing, and analysis. He exhibited a firm grasp of the principles of flight including lift, drag, power, and even propeller design. He seemed to be the only one of the principals of that era who understood the prime factor leading to lift of an airfoil. That is, a lowering of pressure on the upper side of the curved wing due to the Bernoulli Effect. Surprisingly, his contemporaries, even the Wright brothers, believed that the sole lifting force is due to pressure on the wing's underside.  In his two books Gierke details how Herring accomplished his dream of flying. Reading about it is an adventure in itself although one wishes that he could join in during all those camp outs where Herring and others glided down from hilltops on homemade gliders. It's truly a shame that some of his contemporaries didn't give him the credit that he so rightfully deserved, and actually worked against him.  Gierke's books are more than just a chronicle of Herring's technical achievements. The anecdotal digressions mixed into the story make reading the books a real pleasure. Gierke's descriptions of the times during which Herring lived are conveyed in wonderful detail. There are too many such digressions to describe here, but in particular, He gives a real readable presentation of the events at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair including the rope towed glider flights which were performed as part of it.  I don't attend many movies anymore, but if these books were to be made into a movie, I would certainly hurry down to see it. It has all that one would wish for in a movie, science, excitement, intrigue, and even courtroom drama. All in all, David Gierke should be congratulated for producing this work. Gierke suggested in his closure that Herring deserved better treatment than he received in life. With this book combination, Herring has finally received it. - Franklin A. Vassallo, Principal Mechanical Engineer, Calspan Corporation, Buffalo, NY (Retired)Historical adventure and exploration novels take many forms and "To Caress the Air" is one of the best. If you are looking for an interesting, highly detailed account of the times and technology of early aeroplane development, David Gierke's two-volume biographical novel of Augustus Herring is the book for you. The author combines a novelist's suspense and an historian's accuracy with style and solid research, adding much to the literature addressing the on-going question of who really invented the airplane. Gierke's descriptive,well-researched account sets a high standard for aeronautical history buffs with engaging and highly informative descriptions of Herring's personal triumphs and tribulations, as he sought to conquer the achievement of powered, controlled, heavier-than-air flight, including some notorious legal battles onterra firma.  "To Caress the Air" is a well-written "good read" with plenty of detail that reveals the human side of Augustus Herring, a heretofore little known and much-neglected aviation pioneer. - Gordon Schimmel, Ed. D., Educational Director, Academy of Model Aeronautics

This is one entertaining and interesting read. The writing style and the use of dialog move the story along in an enjoyable manner. The comprehensive descriptions of the settings and events make the reader feel like s/he is shoulder to shoulder with Augustus Herring, both in the courtroom and during the flashback scenes. Fine points about courtroom procedure and engineering practice are included throughout the text, keeping the reader well informed as the story continues, and are explained in a way that is understandable to the average reader. Well researched, this book is definitely not a rehash of previously published books on the history of flight. Lots on new information is integrated in the text by the author, who makes insightful connections.

This was one of the best books I have read. True aviation history told in the most fascinating way. I thought I knew about the beganning of powered flight, I was missing some key information. This book opened my eyes and has lead me to read several more books on the pioneers of flight.I loved it and the following book, “Caress the air two”.

A wonderfully written account of a little known period in aviation history. Entertaining to read and full of technical details that would appeal to any aviation buff. I look forward to the next volume. I bought a second copy for a pilot friend and he was equally pleased with the tome.

David Gierke writes about the beginnings of aviation with a sense of humor and a personal perspective.

Historical adventure and exploration novels take many forms and “To Caress the Air” is one of the best. If you are looking for an interesting, highly-detailed account of the times and technology of early aeroplane development, David Gierke’s two-volume biographical novel of Augustus Herring is the book for you.The author combines a novelist’s suspense and an historian’s accuracy with style and solid research, adding much to the literature addressing the on-going question of who really invented the airplane.Gierke’s descriptive, well-researched account sets a high standard for aeronautical history buffs with engaging and highly informative descriptions of Herring’s personal triumphs and tribulations, as he sought to conquer the achievement of powered, controlled, heavier-than-air flight, including some notorious legal battles on terra firma. “To Caress the Air” is a well-written “good read” with plenty of detail that reveals the human side of Augustus Herring, a heretofore little-known and much-neglected aviation pioneer.Gordon Schimmel, Ed.D.Academy of Model Aeronautics

I began reading the book with an open mind as I am not familiar with aviation history and this period of time in history. After reading the first few pages, I was hooked and needed to know the story of Augustus Herring. The author did an incredible amount of research and it shows in the development of the characters and the details that are woven throughout the pages. The author has captured the ability to paint pictures through his words which enable the reader to picture the settings where the story unfolds to hearing the Judge bang his gavel on his bench during the trial. The book not only fully develops Augustus Herring but also the many people who were pivotal in this period of history including this daughter, Chloe. When I finished the book, I immediately started Book 2 because now I need to know the entire story of Augustus Herring.

This is a remarkable achievement in giving Augustus Herring his proper place in the early history of aviation. It's totally engrossing, and I found it hard to put down. I was also extremely eager to get Book two in order to see how this story played out. David Gierke's exhaustive research into the most minute details of Herrings life makes this book not only compelling from an variation perspective, but takes the reader back in time with its incredibly detailed descriptions of daily life then. I felt utterly transported, and came back with a profoundly enriched appreciation for Herring's many contributions, including beyond just aviation, as well as new insight into how this race for powered flight really happened. Bravo!

This book is extremely well researched and written. The author brings to light long lost facts about the invention of the aeroplane in the early 1900s. Through the use of an interesting story about the principle characters the facts are preset to the reader for their inspection.Well done and well worth your time!!
