Review

#1 National Bestseller“China’s ambition to become the world’s dominant power has been there all along, virtually burned into the country’s cultural DNA and hiding, as [Pillsbury] says, in plain sight… The author is correct to assert that China constitutes, by far, the biggest national challenge to America’s position in the world today.”―The Wall Street Journal“Provocative…. detailed and rigorous. [Pillsbury is] right that for Washington, assessing the nature of China’s ambition, and responding to it effectively, may be the central foreign policy challenge of our time.”―Newsweek“Pungently written and rich in detail, this book deserves to enter the mainstream ofdebate over the future of U.S. Chinese relations.”―Foreign Affairs“The Hundred-Year Marathon looks at the critical issues of who is in fact making policy in the Chinese capital and, as a result, it will be read, analyzed and debated for years. Think of Pillsbury as our time’s Paul Revere.”―Gordon Chang, The National Interest“This is a highly engaging and thought-provoking read. It does what few books do well, and that is to mix scholarship, policy, and memoir-style writing in an accessible but still intellectually rich fashion. . . . Pillsbury . . . draw[s] on his extensive knowledge of Chinese historical military writings and theory as well as his interactions with Chinese defectors and senior military officers to develop a compelling analytical defense of this thesis. . . . In the end, whether you agree with Pillsbury or not, the book is well worth a careful read.”―Elizabeth Economy, Council on Foreign Relations“Despite dealing with a weighty subject, Pillsbury says everything that he wants to say . . . [in] this highly readable book. It deserves to be widely read and debated.”―The Christian Science Monitor“Pillsbury’s scholarship is buttressed by an eye-popping amount of declassified material…. Pillsbury’s key claim [is] that China… is methodically undertaking a ‘hundred-year marathon’ strategy to displace the United States as the global hegemon… The time is ripe to examine the trajectory of American relations with the world’s second-largest economy [and] the marathon is hardly over.”―The Weekly Standard “Following the Communist victory in the Chinese civil war, Americans agonized over ‘Who lost China?’ If we do not recognize the Chinese party-state for the predatory animal that it is, in 20 years the question we will be asking ourselves is ‘Who lost the world?’ The answer will be, ‘We did.’”―The Washington Times“A presentation of China’s hidden agenda grounded in the author’s longtime work at the U.S. Defense Department…. Fodder for concerned thought.”―Kirkus Reviews“This is without question the most important book written about Chinese strategy and foreign policy in years. Michael Pillsbury has spent more than four decades for the Pentagon and the CIA talking to and learning from a core of Chinese ‘hard-liners’ who may be the driving force behind Chinese foreign policy today under Xi Jinping. Based on meticulous scholarship and written in lively, engaging prose, this book offers a sobering corrective to what has long been the dominant, soothing narrative of Sino-American cooperation.”―Robert Kagan, author of The World America Made and Of Paradise and Power“A provocative exploration of the historical sources of China’s grand strategy to become #1.”―Graham Allison, Director of Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs“Michael Pillsbury has been meeting with, talking to, and studying the ‘hawks’ in China’s military and intelligence apparatus for more than four decades, since back when America and China were cooperating against the Soviet Union. In this fascinating, provocative new book, he lays out the hawks’ views about the United States and their long-term strategies for overcoming American power by the middle of this century. In the process, the book challenges the wrong-headed assumptions in Washington about a gradually reforming China. Given the direction China has been taking in the past few years, Pillsbury’s book takes on immediate relevance.”―James Mann, author of About Face: A History of America’s Curious Relationship with China, The China Fantasy, and Beijing Jeep“The Hundred-Year Marathon is based on work that Michael Pillsbury did for the CIA that landed him the Director’s Exceptional Performance Award. It is a fascinating chronicle of his odyssey from the ranks of the ‘panda-huggers’ to a principled, highly informed, and lonely stance alerting us to China’s long-term strategy of achieving dominance. He shows that we face a clever, entrenched, and ambitious potential enemy, suffused with the shrewdness of Sun Tzu conducting a determined search for the best way to sever our Achilles’ heel. We have vital work to do, urgently.”―R. James Woolsey, former Director of Central Intelligence and chairman of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies

I appreciated the author's perspective and willingness to be honest about his perspective and how it has changed and obviously been informed over the years. Having lived through, but not old enough to really have understood much of the political happenings of the 60's through the 80's this book gave me a new viewpoint to look through for today's international political happenings. I highly recommend this read to conservative and liberal thinkers alike. Mostly, I recommend it to people who take the time to stop and think.

This book should be read by everyone who thinks Russia is our main problem. What an eye opener.

I kind of liked this book, and learned from it, but also have significant problems with it.First, let me state the strong point. This book is great for being able to read key quotes from primary Chinese documents and sources. Most reviews are overwhelmingly positive, so I want to focus my review on the underwhelming parts of this book.Pillsbury is upfront about the fact that he used to be a duped fool and had poor analysis. He claims that he learned from it and has now changed his views to be more wary.To me, it seems, he is still falling into the same trap of being naive. The enemy is still a couple steps ahead of Pillsbury. His coverage of Golitsyn, a Russian defector from 1961, which opens up the book, is terrible. He dismisses Golitsyn by saying he was a "conspiracy theorist and would later claim that British prime minister Harold Wilson was a KGB informant." That's quite a claim by Pillsbury! In December of 1962, the pro-America labor party leader Gaitskell went to Russia. In January of 1963 he died of sickness at age 56. Harold Wilson took over the labor party and became Prime Minister. This is a guy who in the 1940s had been traveling to Russia.Okay so Golitsyn, who defected in 1961, says that Wilson is a KGB agent... So how does Wilson rule? By keep close ties to KGB agents and handing out jobs to KGB agents. Then Pillsbury goes on to imply Golitsyn was a Russian plant, notwithstanding the fact that Golitsyn helped catch Philby.Pillsbury says the real truth teller was Nosenko. This was a guy who defected right after Oswald killed JFK to say that he had special information showing the KGB was not behind Oswald. He even claimed that, though Oswald had been a marine, operated sensitive radar tech in Japan, and lived in Russia, the KGB had never tried to recruit him.I mean, give me a break! His take on Golitsyn and Nosenko is so silly it's hard for me to trust him.A couple more critiques on the China parts of his book...He frames China as being run by the "war hawks." But China is officially run by Communists. Xi sure seems like a Communist. But Pillsbury talks very little, or not at all, about their Communist ideology. A rather striking and bizarre omission.Another problem, his views on Assassin's Mace are myopic. He never talks about the possibility that North Korea itself if their Mace. Further, despite the fact that he repeatedly quotes Chinese manuals which explicitly talk about using electromagnetic weapons--"The side with electromagnetic combat superiority will make full use of that Assassin's Mace weapon to win naval victory"--he will only very briefly refers euphemistically to an "EMP generation" to attack us... Little or no mention of nuclear EMP attack. He keeps honing in on laser threats, or missiles to destroy our satellites, when it would take just a single nuclear EMP strike to achieve all the things that China says it wants to achieve w Assassin Mace.So bizarre.

What is interesting about this book is that the author admits his own ignorance and complicity in helping China to a position where they could become a real threat to the US and the world. I have worked in China and have two take away lessons. First, the Chinese make it incredibly difficult to identify the final decision maker and second, the culture is a "whatever it takes", rules, laws, norms be damned. That is not to say the Chinese are bad people, just different. Treating them, as our government has and expecting them to become a country of Thomas Jeffersons is just foolish.

A picture of the Chinese challenge painted in an easily understood format. I was left with a feeling I understand now the challenge we face with the Chinese ascendancy and the challenge that present to American dominance of the commercial and military world order. A real challenge we have to recognize and commit to winning.

China is now taking, has always been taking, and plans in the future on taking this country for a ride. And it is about time the US does something about it! When you read this book, you can draw no other conclusion. The US has a very open, trusting and helping culture, which separates this country from any other in the world and makes me proud to be an American (or at least it used to, but I believe we'll make it back). And China is taking serious advantage of that culture; compounded by the useless, bi-partisan bickering of our politics, both of which are playing right into their hands. Like a magician that distracts our attention from what is really going on. But this is not for entertainment, it is to build China in its Politburo's (not people's no less) interest, at the expense of severely, and potentially irreparably diminishing the United States. I pray to God the country wakes up in time to save ourselves or our children, who already are, will pay en even more tremendous price.

I wrote a big, rambling review, but I decided to keep it much shorter. The author answered many of the questions I had concerning China and it's global expansion (social, economic, military, religious ). I hunted down many of the author's research notes and I agree with the author: China is definitely molding the world to exist under the China umbrella, and they will do anything and everything to ensure it occurs.

5 star rating for an author who has been there and done that. His insights derived from being a Chinese sympathizer to one who has unmasked their intentions are startling and impossible to refute.

Review

"Much like an actual cat, this book manages to be funny, weird, and lovably adorable all at the same time. You will love Pusheen and you will love this book." (Matt Inman, founder of TheOatmeal.com and author of How to Tell if Your Cat is Plotting to Kill You)"Pusheen is what everyone else wishes they had come up with after the internet was invented. It is also possibly the reason the internet was invented in the first place. Now that it's a book, I fully expect it to resurrect the print industry as a whole." (Kate Beaton, author of Hark! A Vagrant)"Pusheen is easily the most charming of all internet cats!" (Anthony Clark, www.Nedroid.com)"I thought I was tired of cat gifs until I discovered Pusheen." (Jeph Jacques, www.QuestionableContent.net)"Pusheen is a little bouncy marshmallow of a cat who perfectly combines absolute cuteness and absolute trouble, which is, as all cat lovers know, why we love them." (Jess Fink, author of We Can Fix It)"When it comes to famous Internet cats, Pusheen rules the litter box. The cute plump feline is Tumblr's premier kitty. With clean and simple shapes, Claire Belton's cartoon is a mix of Hello Kitty's cuteness and Felix the Cat's adventurous spirit." (Fernando Alfonso III, reporter at the Daily Dot)"Pusheen teaches us how to LIVE: Nap as hard as you party. Seek out the small joys in life, and eat them. Eat everything. And keep moving." (Will Zweigart, creator of Cashcats.biz and Sketchy Santas)"Pusheen is the most adorable, squishy little nugget of felinity that has ever graced the fair pages of my Internet browser. I want to eat her, like a tiny grey cute-flavoured marshmallow." (Gemma Correll, www.GemmaCorrell.com)“Claire Belton has made Pusheen one of the world’s great characters. The talent and imagination [here] could power enough love to save the world. If Pusheen doesn’t capture your heart, I will personally refund your money.” (Fred Seibert, Frederator Studios)“This was too freakin’ cute. … How can you resist?” (The Armchair Librarian)

I think one of the reasons people love Pusheen is because she is basically all of us, realized in cat form. She is the Hello Kitty of our generation. This is a fun book full of Pusheen being Pusheen illustrations. She eats junk food, she watches Netflix, she just lays there, she's us. The photos make you smile because she's just an adorable cat doing cat things—and human things. This would make a great book to own or to give as a gift. Don't forget to add a Pusheen Plush to the gift. And if they are really a fan, get a subscription to the PusheenBox (Google it); they are amazing gift boxes.Bring Pusheen into your life and brighten it up. Recommended.

"I Am Pusheen the Cat" contains the adorable illustrations of Pusheen living her life, as an every-cat. If you're not familiar with Pusheen, she is a grey tabby cat whose name translates from Irish Gaelic to "kitten". She has a zest for adventure and an equal love of food. Many of the stories and comics, featuring Pusheen and occasionally her sister Stormy, are comics that long-time Pusheen fans will no doubt recount with joy for the second (or third, or fourth...) time. Newcomers to Pusheen will undoubtedly be enchanted with her all the same from the collection in this book. The quality of the book itself is superb, and the pricing is on par as such. "I Am Pusheen the Cat" is a fantastic book to share with all ages. This book is perfectly Pusheen.

Adorable and beautifuly illiterated, I would recommend it to any cat lover :).

The title of my review says it all. If you have ever had a cat, you will appreciate this book. If you read it with your cat, he/she may not appreciate it so much.

My daughter loves this book. She's eleven and a big Pusheen fan along with the girls at her school. They keep referring back to pages in which Pusheen is doing something cute that reminds them of their real cats. I think it's adorable, too. Even though there may be an Internet site that has the same material, sometimes it's nice just to have a good old fashioned real book.

This is very cute. Yes, it is a collection of things about cats shown in the form of Pusheen. Yes it is 125 pages of pictures with a few words on each. So, basically a collection of cat memes. I'm not sure why anyone would expect anything but that. As it stands it has adorable illustrations and cute blurbs that cat owners will relate to. And, it is enjoyable for young kids if you know how to read to a kid by making voices, etc. My 3 year old giggles and laughs. We laughed too. The book itself is good construction. If you are expecting Tolstoy don't order this.

My daughter loves Pusheen so I bought this book for her birthday. She loved it! I looked though it and ended up enjoying it myself! My husband couldn't believe I was laughing at a book with the same cat on every page, so I had him flip through it & he was chuckling too. Simple, light-hearted humor, who couldn't use more of that in their day?

I have only been a fan of Pusheen for a week or so. But this is the cutest book I have every read! The only problem I have is the price...$10.99 for a 15 min book. It would be nice if it was longer. But other that that...It pretty good!I recommend this book to anyone who loves cute.;)

"I Am Pusheen the Cat" is absolutely adorable.I bought it as a gift for a cat-loving friend, and I was impressed with the quality of the book. The cover is glossy, the pages are thick, and each story brought a smile to my face. The cartoons are hilarious, and really resembled my cat's personality.I would definitely recommend this book to cat-lovers, people who just want to laugh and smile, or anyone who wishes they could sleep on a marshmallow.

I thoroughly loved this book, both as a certified dog trainer and the owner of a seriously damaged rescue dog. I devoured it, ruined pages with (non rulered!) underlinings and notes in pen, highly recommended it and stupidly: Loaned it out. I rely on second-hand books, once I've bought a copy an author can hopefully see payment in some form, as I am often volunteering more than earning in some small measure against the endless and tragic slaughter of unwanted (I won't go into the why, in this format) dogs and other companion animals. Some people want a "quick fix" for everything. They should probably not get a dog. All animals, regardless of breed, are individuals and like us, prone to mistakes, differences in abilities to understand our views/desires for their behavior and do not succeed in many cases, due to the handler/owner/guardian failing to communicate clearly, consistently, compassionately (not use fear or compulsion to create desired behavior, which is scientifically proven LESS effective for teaching animals, children, etc.), with patience, love and tolerance. We are quick to ignore our own faults, flaws, foibles and worse, yet even as we take so many past freedoms away form our pets and work longer hours; we want and demand their perfection. An animal is not a product, any more than a child is. They are their own being, that we can guide, teach manners and behaviors to and if, as is the case with my dog, they are mentally damaged, we need to support their needs in any way we can.The author took dogs like mine, who were absolutely the sort most would say to, or have, "put down". She made them successful in ways I am still astounded by and thus, this book is one of the best I have ever read (countless, trust me!) on dog training/behavior and relationships. I am generally too busy/lazy/forgetful to post about the brilliant books I've read during my journey to better understand my mutt and dogs in general: I feel I need to remedy this, so here's my first on Amazon.I am writing, in part because I glimpsed some reviews that were not as favourable as mine, and you don't know me from Adam, so I understand if you take this with a grain of salt. I'm on FB and the Twit, have been working with dogs for only six or seven years, but have trained Working Detection Dogs, rehabbed rescue dogs and am the grateful owner of a very challenging dog, who has taught me more about relationship based training, myself and how we each mirror the other than words and our often less-than-perfect behavior will ever show.If you are beyond the drama of "Do not try this at home" videos, are looking for a greater insight to the journey that owning a dog (and this comes with even those with fantastic pedigreed lines) and would like to improve your understanding of canines, then I seriously suggest you read this. Any dog training book, regardless of the writer, is written with their best intentions and experience. I read books by trainers that I would never use as a role model, due to various reasons, but all have something we can learn from. So, if knowledge is something you desire, as well as inspiration, thenthis is definitely one for you.I'd write more specifically about what makes this a great read, but until I re-read it, that'll have to wait. TBI has destroyed my photographic memory, so for now, just know I'm getting another copy, as I miss and want to read this book again.

I have a 2 year old Bull Terrier that was aggressive to other dogs. Using the techniques and "psychology" of this book, I was able to train him to be social at the dog park. Understanding the difference between "biddable' and "nonbiddable" dogs was important in understanding my difficult dog.Not just for Bull Terriers, this book is an excellent resource for training any dog because it is based on positive reinforcement and healthy interaction between you and your pup.

This book is great, as an experienced dog handler and budding trainer I learned a ton- a great read for anyone who owns a dog.I'm writing this review specifically because I would not recommend the digital version. The first half of the book is full of typos and grammatical errors- I actually put the book down for a month or two because it was so distracting. I'm shocked and disappointed that no on proof-read the digital version. I buy kindle books all the time and although there are some errors, it's never been this bad. It reads like someone rushed through it... lame.

I will update, but this is the clearest book I've read so far and IT WORKS. My BichPoo is new, but our other dog didn't respond to "traditional" methods which my husband and I were both uncomfortable with. He was a street dog presumably ALL his life before being rescued by Nowzad, so he is very smart when needed and able to manipulate things in order to get what he needs. This isn't to say he's a "bad" dog, but being able to fend for himself was a priority in his old life. If you want a THINKING dog with an intact spirit PLEASE give this book a try. My dogs have two completely different temperaments and histories, yet both are turning into amazing individuals who at times my Inlaws believe could be on TV lol. Now, it will take more time initially for the traditional behaviors to be learned, but they learn them versus do them out of fear or only to receive food. For me and my family, that's a plus. I look forward to more from Jane, and she's making me want to fly up (I think she's in NJ and we're currently in TX) in person to thank her for her wonderful book.

Was hoping for more from this book. The author is the same lady who does the "Puppy Culture" DVD's and the DVD's are awesome. However, this is yet another clicker training book. Clicker training works, and if you are a pet owner or just beginning in companion events, this is a good book for you. But, this book is not the same quality as the DVD's imo. Competition folks can go ahead and skip it.
