Born Fighting: How the Scots-Irish Shaped America

Review

“Born Fighting is a bombshell—or else the most brilliant battle flare ever launched by a book. James Webb reveals the all-but-invisible ethnic group that has created the core beliefs of democracy American-style: our rights come from God, not the Government; all of us are born equal, and “born aristocrats” don’t exist; and tread on either of those two truths, and we’ll fight you down to the last unbroken hyoid bone. The Scots-Irish, for such is their name, have fought all our wars for us, including Vietnam. James Webb was there, and he can count. He has written not only an engrossing story but also an important work of sociological history in the tradition of the great James Graham Leyburn.”—Tom Wolfe

From the Inside Flap

In his first work of nonfiction, bestselling novelist James Webb tells the epic story of the Scots-Irish, a people whose lives and worldview were dictated by resistance, conflict, and struggle, and who, in turn, profoundly influenced the social, political, and cultural landscape of America from its beginnings through the present day. More than 27 million Americans today can trace their lineage to the Scots, whose bloodline was stained by centuries of continuous warfare along the border between England and Scotland, and later in the bitter settlements of England's Ulster Plantation in Northern Ireland. Between 250,000 and 400,000 Scots-Irish migrated to America in the eighteenth century, traveling in groups of families and bringing with them not only long experience as rebels and outcasts but also unparalleled skills as frontiersmen and guerrilla fighters. Their cultural identity reflected acute individualism, dislike of aristocracy and a military tradition, and, over time, the Scots-Irish defined the attitudes and values of the military, of working class America, and even of the peculiarly populist form of American democracy itself. "Born Fighting is the first book to chronicle the full journey of this remarkable cultural group, and the profound, but unrecognized, role it has played in the shaping of America. Written with the storytelling verve that has earned his works such acclaim as "captivating . . . unforgettable" (the" Wall Street Journal on "Lost Soliders), Scots-Irishman James Webb, Vietnam combat veteran and former Naval Secretary, traces the history of his people, beginning nearly two thousand years ago at Hadrian's Wall, when the nation of Scotland was formed northof the Wall through armed conflict in contrast to England's formation to the south through commerce and trade. Webb recounts the Scots' odyssey--their clashes with the English in Scotland and then in Ulster, their retreat from one war-ravaged land to another. Through engrossing chronicles of the challenges the Scots-Irish faced, Webb vividly portrays how they developed the qualities that helped settle the American frontier and define the American character. "Born Fighting shows that the Scots-Irish were 40 percent of the Revolutionary War army; they included the pioneers Daniel Boone, Lewis and Clark, Davy Crockett, and Sam Houston; they were the writers Edgar Allan Poe and Mark Twain; and they have given America numerous great military leaders, including Stonewall Jackson, Ulysses S. Grant, Audie Murphy, and George S. Patton, as well as most of the soldiers of the Confederacy (only 5 percent of whom owned slaves, and who fought against what they viewed as an invading army). It illustrates how the Scots-Irish redefined American politics, creating the populist movement and giving the country a dozen presidents, including Andrew Jackson, Teddy Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Ronald Reagan, and Bill Clinton. And it explores how the Scots-Irish culture of isolation, hard luck, stubbornness, and mistrust of the nation's elite formed and still dominates blue-collar America, the military services, the Bible Belt, and country music. Both a distinguished work of cultural history and a human drama that speaks straight to the heart of contemporary America, "Born Fighting reintroduces America to its most powerful, patriotic, and individualistic cultural group--one too often ignored or taken forgranted.

James Webb and the Philosophical FairiesNow, I have special loving feelings toward James Webb. I elected him to the U. S. Senate with my $100, the only time I have sent money out of state to a political candidate for anything but the highest office. I read and re-read BORN FIGHTING in the little room next to my computer room, understanding, sympathizing, and a very few times envying (the times when he hears stories from his older kinfolks). I know how risky he was in describing Reconstruction, and I sympathize, because I have lived through the fierce self-righteousness of fanatical Political Correctness in the academy. But something seemed wrong on 244--apparently the same page in the hardback and the paperback, if Amazon.com is right--seemed nasty, cheap. Something did not seem to jibe with the Jim Webb I admire:THE OCCUPIERS, THE POLITICAL REEDUCATORS WHO THIS TIME CALLED THEMSELVES RADICAL RECONSTRUCTIONISTS, THE PHILOSOPHICAL FAIRIES, THE CARPETBAGGER BUSINESSPEOPLE WITH THEIR GRAND PLANS AND SPECIAL DEALS . . . .Now, my James Webb would never have said "the philosophical fairies."What James Webb must have written or meant to write was "the philosophical Pharisees." I know exactly what he meant, and he did not mean fairies, folks. He meant Pharisees.

I picked this up from BookBub for an obscenely low price, having had it recommended to me by my friend Keith. I’m half Irish (“Potato Irish” not Scots-Irish), but my maternal grandmother came from County Antrim in North Ireland and believe you me she hated the English, so there’s some commonality, but I’m getting ahead of myself.Mr. Webb’s thesis is that is that many U.S. citizens are descendants of the Scots-Irish, which originated in Scotland, marked by intense tribal loyalty and a willingness to fight against big government of any sort. So to quote Mr. Webb: “(The) journey (of the Scots-Irish)…has been not simply one of hardship or disappointment, but of frequent and bitter conflict. These conflicts, from which they have never in two thousand years of history retreated, have followed a historically consistent cycle of, among other things, a values-based combativeness, an insistent egalitarianism, and a refusal to be dominated from above, no matter the cost.”The history of these people dates back to the times when the Celtic tribes resisted the power of the Roman Empire, and eventually centered in Scotland. The prominence and importance of William Wallace (“Braveheart”) and Robert the Bruce in the development of the Scottish people is certainly given credit. The joining of four intense and bellicose independent tribal peoples to fight the English seems a daunting task, but it was accomplished. Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai’s attempts to bring the country’s fourteen tribal groups together certainly seems apropos in this context. Many of the Scottish people immigrated to Ulster, in Northern Ireland, where they differentiated themselves from both the “potato Irish” Catholics and the English Protestants, becoming fundamentalist Calvinists, and fighting against religious persecution and England’s futile and violent attempts to bring this group into the fold. Those who left Ireland for America ended up not going to the large commerce centers but instead sought out the primitive and dangerous frontier of the remote Appalachians. Many of them made their way to the American South, also challenging both the Government and the frontier. Daniel Boone, among others, is set up as an example of such a person of Scotch-Irish lineage.Again due to their willingness to fight for individuality, Mr. Webb indicates that up to 40% of the American militia during the Revolutionary War was made up of Sots-Irish. Many were also soldiers for the South during the Civil War. And, considering the recent conflict over the symbolism of the Confederate flag, Mr. Webb’s contention that what is now pejoratively termed “Redneck” is a continuation of the anti-government, tribal mentality that made the Scots-Irish survive. To quote Mr. Webb: “Blamed for slavery although only a minute percentage actually owned slaves, they suffered for generations after the Civil War due to the twin calamities of Reconstruction and an ever-increasing seclusion of the Appalachian and Allegheny Mountains.”But it didn’t stop there: Many Scots-Irish have been members of the Military through every armed conflict the U.S. has had. And for their motivation, well, Mr. Webb describes it as related to “Celtic ties of kinship:” “From the earliest known history of the Celts, military service was viewed not simply as an obligation but as a high honor. Fighting for – and alongside – the tribal leader (or, later, the Great Captain, or as now, one’s branch of service) brought one into the family.”Mr. Webb spends an entire chapter on Andrew Jackson, military man and President, as not only an example of the Scots-Irish culture but as a person who influenced the more populist movements in America. Mr. Webb quotes historian Walter Russell Mead: “(the Jacksonians believe) that the government should do everything in its power to promote the well-being – political, moral, economic – of the folk community.”This summary only scratches the surface of the rich and complex history of this hardy people, and certainly helps explain Mr. Webb’s pride in his family history of military service and political service, as well as some of his more controversial outlooks as a contemporary Presidential candidate. I greatly enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it heartily, no matter your ethnic background or political leanings.

This quite simply is an essential work for the understanding of American history and culture. It is a delightful dip into the history of my own people as well, which is a bonus for me and those of my ilk. I did find the last few chapters very moving if a bit too personal to James Webb's personal experience. I found my self tearing up from the power of his family narrative. I am convinced that I now understand parts of American history more fully than I did before. We cannot grasp the totally of the American experience without understanding this remarkable book.

This was my starting point in pursuing an interest from my late mother in genealogy. The book gave me a road guide into the pre American Revolution back country Ulster Scots and how a French sir name (Chavous) became intertwined with Ulster Scot ancestors. It also provided hints into my political and social attitudes whether from environment or heredity, I do not know. The fact remains that it was the impetus that has taken me to extensive reading into Western European History (which I hated in high school and college) and trips to Scotland and Ireland. I have purchased three copies of this book that I have given to people that were interested. Anyone whose ancestors that traveled the "Great Wagon Road" must read this book by a very talented writer.

Very well worth the read, but understand that Jim Webb's writing can romanticize the culture he is speaking about. Being Scotts-Irish-English-Native American from a Kentucky area family, this book made me very proud of my heritage and placed a desire in me to know and be able to articulate my family's past. However, there are many cultures that progressed through history with tumultuous pasts. Also, stylistically, Jim Webb's citations are only numbered as you read, so if you actually want to know the source you have to go look in the back of the book. It would be nice to have the work mentioned in-text. I know that seems small, but I've been reading too much Mark Levin and David Barton recently and, when you're use to it, you notice when something that convenient is gone.

I tried reading my paperback version of "Wicked" but couldn't get into it. I downloaded it from Audible as part of my membership and I spent hours and hours with the book. Time well-spent. An incredible story from an amazingly unexpected perspective.

I wish that I had researched this book more before I ordered it for my teenage daughter. She and I are both obsessed with the musical Wicked, so I bought her all 4 of the books for her 13th birthday. She was so excited! Then she started reading this one and brought it to me. It's full of sexual encounters and really raunchy descriptions. I am absolutely mortified that I didn't check it out first.NOTHING LIKE THE MUSICAL!!!

I was introduced to the music of the Broadway musical Wicked not that long ago, and was immediately intrigued with the idea of the Wicked Witch of the West not being as evil as she was made out to be in The Wizard of Oz. What if it was the Wizard who was the evil one? The idea of turning such a revered story on its head was too much to resist, and I was pleasantly surprised when my friend starbreiz sent me some items from my Amazon wishlist, including Wicked by Gregory Maguire.::: There Is Always More to the Story :::Gregory Maguire's first novel turned one of the most established legends of our time on its ear with its premise: what if the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz wasn't so wicked after all, but was actually viewed that way based only on perception? The story surrounds the life of Elphaba, the daughter of a minister and a woman who wasn't the most faithful minister's wife ever. Her unfortunate tale begins with her birth, when she is born with green skin, teeth so sharp she bites her own skin, and an aversion to water. Her mother turns to herbal drugs, and her missionary father believes that Elphaba's condition is somehow his fault. The only stable figure is really Elphaba's mother's former nanny, who comes to take care of the little green girl.Elphaba's childhood is defined by her father's missionary work in Quadling country, the poorest section of Oz, and a far cry from the upper class of Munchinland to which her mother was born.Maguire picks up the story when Elphaba is older, and a new student at Shiz, the university of Oz. The university is divided into all-male and all-female colleges, and Elphaba ends up rooming with the very snobby Galinda, much to Galinda's dismay. Elphaba quickly becomes suspicious of the headmistress, Madame Morrible, and after an Animal (the walking, talking, intelligent versions, much like the Cowardly Lion) professor dies under mysterious circumstances, Elphaba finagles an audience with the Wizard for herself and Galinda, where she quickly realizes that the Wizard is not the paternalistic ruler he was believed to be.Elphaba sends Galinda back to Shiz and begins a life of resistance, first on behalf of the Animals, then with a life in a convent (or mauntery, as they call it), and finally ends up in the land of the Vinkus, where she creates her famed winged monkeys, begins to dabble in sorcery, and her story intersects with the story of Dorothy that we all grew up with.::: Politics, Social Classes, Despots... Just Like Real Life :::Trying to sum up the various plots in Wicked is impossible, and I feel impotent even attempting it. Maguire has created an incredible character and the book will leave you unable to watch the movie the same way again. Not only has he created a rich and sympathetic character in Elphaba, but he has also created a world that seems so real that every time I had to put the book down to do something else I felt as if I was being jolted from one world to another. While at times it might seem as if Maguire is leaving too much out, jumping as he does from one period in Elphaba's life to another, he has chosen the most significant points to focus on; each set of experiences is one that would have shaped the woman who became known as the Wicked Witch of the West. The hardest part of reading Wicked is knowing how it is going to end. From the start, you know that Elphaba is doomed; that she will die at Dorothy's hand, and nothing will change that. Still, even knowing this, you find yourself hoping against hope that Maguire will change the story and find a loophole for Elphaba, that she won't truly die, but live on, fighting the corrupt Wizard and everything he has created.::: This Isn't Broadway :::For those introduced to the softer side of Elphaba through the Broadway show of the same name, the novel will probably be a huge surprise. "Based on" is the operative phrase in the description of the musical, which has a far simpler plot than the novel. It would have been impossible to condense all the political intrigue and vast cast of characters in the novel into a musical, and many of the plot devices were oversimplified, including the love affair between Elphaba and Fiyero. The Boq of the novel is, in fact, a Munchinlander who had a crush on Galinda/Glinda, but he plays a far more important role in helping Elphaba in her research for Doctor Dillamond, and later, in helping Dorothy. While I love the show, the book has a much greater depth than the musical, and requires more of the reader than the audience member.Wicked is one of the best novels I've read in a long, long time. I find myself reading it over again, still hoping that Elphaba can be saved, and still getting lost in the world of Oz as Maguire sees it. This is a book not to be missed, and I guarantee that you'll never view blue gingham and ruby slippers the same way again.

Very interesting perspective. Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, was painfully misunderstood and rejected (by the color of her skin, as well as her unconventional manners) rather than actually wicked. In this unique book, she grew to become an Animal rights advocate and more of a guerrilla. Her "cause" was not that unjustified in a world of vastly crooked politics, yet she faces a bitter end. Quite an allegory, this story. For a mature audience, however, and not recommended for kids.

Among the best books I have ever read. A discussion of good and evil in an alternate but not completely unfamiliar universe, the story is complex, many-layered and very funny. It touches on both the value and the absurdity of families, communities, and politics. The conversation at the dinner table in Elphaba's former school of Shiz after the "murder" of Madame Morrible is worth the attention of those interested in philosophy and theology. Gregory Maguire's writing is superb throughout. I will read it many times, I think, just for this kind of fun :"Were you waving your wand where it wasn't wanted?"

I originally purchased this CD with the intent that it would be suitable as the audio book for my car pool with a teenager. While the story is good and getting the WWotW back story is interesting, we feel that the subject matter and details are more ADULT than Young Adult. I'd recommend to preview if you intend this book to be for a Young Adult or to listen to it in mixed company as again, our family found it to be more racy than we had expected.

For years, I loved watching The Wizard of Oz when it would be shown on TV each holiday season. Then a few years ago, a friend took me to see WICKED when it was on stage at The Orpheum Theater here in San Francisco. It was/is, by far, the most wonderful, life changing show I have ever seen. Then at a Facebook page dedicated to discussion about the Musical, someone recommended this book (actually the series). and I decided to purchase it. I'm a slow/detailed reader, so i am only a few chapters in ... and I love the very detailed way that Gregory Maguire has unfolded the life of Elphaba and her family. I'm not sure if I wish i had seen the show first, or read the book first, but I am enjoying it these few chapters in and look forward to continuing with the other books in the series. This is my first time to purchase from this seller, and I was very pleased with the arrival time and the quality of the formerly owned book. Any of you who are Elphaba fans will, I believe, enjoy the book.

Very disapointing. Not up to Maxtone-Graham's usual standards. Poorly written in some places. A few factual mistakes and a lack of quality photographs. There are thounds of pictures of the UNITED STATES. Why so few here? Many of those that ARE included are of poor quality. Overall this is not the book I was expecting.

This is a wonderful book. I was so anxious to have it because this is how with my Air Force husband and our family returnedfrom a Paris assignment years ago. The book is beautiful, I gave one to each of my children.

Excellent book. John Maxtone-Graham is the most outstanding author of books dealing with ocean liners, and this is one of his best. Recommend this book to all who are interested in the subject.

An amazing work on the fastest ocean liner ever built. With the Queen Mary the only liner still in existence.

Wonderful book. Brings back so many memories of a great ship.

Amazing book!!! This ship is so special, to a large number of people who are hoping she'll one day be refurbished instead of rotting at port...

little dry - but very informative.

Wonderful book from top author Maxtone-Graham!!! From text to pictures.... a great read.
