My 7 year old LOVED this

Purchased for a Christmas present for my Black Panther obsessed son who hates to read. But when I opened it half the print is upside down in the middle of the book. Amazon said they will send a replacement hopefully it will be right side up.

My son and I really enjoyed this book. We noted the use of different colours for the writing and different colored pages throughout the book which was cool but the dark purple writing on black paper was hard to read.

My son loved it. Gave him insight into the story before the movie was released.

It is in my classroom library. Many students were turned off because of the words “chapter book,” but one student picked it up and declared it a mix of the comic and he movie.

I loved this episode and all of the action in it.

I would recommend this book for background information around the movie and include in any Super Hero Library Collection.

Great book. A little slower than some of the other super hero books. Has a good reminder that self control and meditation is important.

This book is actually available online, free, from sonatype (google "maven reference"). I've come across at least three points in this text (which was published in 2008) that had me scratching my head, and then finally (after too much wasted time) coming to the conclusion that the text must be bungled, or garbled. So I went to the online version and found that this was indeed the case, and the errors have been corrected there.There is much good material in this book, but if it's available for free, and the free version is more reliable, it lowers the motivation to buy the book.One serious complaint I have about both this and the online version is the beginning of the chapter on assemblies. Most of the book is not like this, but that particular section is one of the worst examples I've ever seen of a complicated topic approached from the assumption that you already understand the complicated topic. It doesn't even begin by defining clearly, to a newbie, just what an assembly is, and why you want to use it. Instead, it dives into some puzzling minutiae about the difficulties you can run into using assemblies. I had to go to other online resources (maven.org documentation was helpful, which is ironic, because most of it is written from the you-already-understand perspective, and that's what drove me to this book). Otherwise, I think I would have remained on the starting line with this topic.Learning maven is not easy, and I expect to struggle a bit, so when I say that they started on the assumption that you already understand the topic, I'm not whining that they didn't hold my hand sufficiently. I'm saying that, on the first, second and third readings, the gist of the text soared straight over my head. I might as well have been reading it in Greek.Having said that, there is material further into the chapter on setting up and configuring assemblies that is very helpful. However, it also contains one of the serious errors. There is a list of items describing how to resolve expressions in an outputFileNameMapping element. Item 1 has four subitems under it, a, b, c and d. Item 1 begins by saying, "If the expression matches the pattern ${artifact.*}". Sub-item d begins with "If the expression matches the patterns ${pom.*} or ${project.*}". Now, how can an expression match both ${artifact.*} and ${pom.*}? The online version corrects this, and turns sub-item d into item 2. (The original item 2 became item 3, and it was also revamped.) So that was some time wasted. Considering that this book was published in 2008, I would think that they might have at least corrected the errors in the e-book version by now.Another, more minor, quibble is that the book talks about "mojos" but doesn't explain what they are; they're just maven goals. "Mojo" became a term to refer to a goal. Again, I found this on maven.org's documentation. (I also had this mixed up in my mind; codehaus has a set of maven plugin "mojos," and for some time I thought "mojo" was a codehaus term.)Having said all of this, I have learned much from the e-book, there is no question about that. If you really want an epub version of the book, to read it conveniently on a Kindle, then it's worth the modest price. If you come across a passage that seems to make no sense, bookmark and look it up later online.

When I saw the less than 5 star rating I really wanted to add my input. I particularly appreciated the content starting in chapters 6 and 7, about having a hierarchy of related projects, mixing packaging types of pom, jar and war files, reviewing the components of web apps and how they're packaged into Maven, etc.Our team has been working with Maven for 6 months now and I had previously read quite a bit online, plus purchased a couple other Maven books. For where I'm at in my learning curve, this book fits what I needed. I think somebody new to Maven could still follow it; it's not quite a "recipe" oriented as some books, but really clear writing and explicit steps.The book is now a few years old, but these tools and concepts are still relevant today (Q4 2012). If they do an update, I'd suggest a bit more in Chapter 6 about their web.xml file (reason for multiple targets, review the file-class-url mappings, etc.), though none of those issues prevent the chapter from being useful, and is really more of a review for folks who haven't put together a lot of webapps using any framework.

This book is a good start for a great toolkit.Some people read books cover to cover - not me. So I like book such as this where I can go read a section when I want to.My humble advice - Please practice using Maven. Some of the Maven concepts and lingo are non-intuitive and will begin to make sense only when you build projects and artifacts yourself - adding complexity gradually. And please don't bite too much. Best to get one's head around the basics first and then tackle the trickier elements such as filtering, profile etc.Another suggestion - Make a list of few topics you really want to learn each week and then focus your work around those topics instead of trying to absorb it all. For example, focus on lifecycle and phases one week and work with a very simple artifact with minimum frills.

This is an excellent book. I think the author is clear, informative, and explains all the small stuff that's necessary to get the examples working. I really dont like programming books that label themselves "intermediate" just as an excuse to be lazy and skip explanatory steps. This book is not like that all. As of August 23, 2011, the download site of the books example code still works. I'm able to follow along with the authors explanations and am able to get each chapters code to run easily on my local setup. I'm brand new to Maven, so I'm surprised I could follow along so quickly and painlessly. I'm used to reading programming books where the example code has to be tweaked with the help of searching the Internet for help to get up and running locally. The quality of the writing and the fact that the examples work so easily means this book easily gets high commendations. I hope the author writes more books, because he's very good. I like Cameron MacKenzie books, too.

One day the gourd fills with fish enough for all the hungry villagers; but when some curious boys are asked to protect this magical food source, catastrophe occurs. They inadvertently break the gourd, and "in an instant everything in the hut was afloat." Torrents "flowed and rose to cover the land" and eventually "all kinds of sea creatures came out of the gourd to fill the water with life"--the villagers will never hunger again. Crespo's debut book successfully combines a spare, to-the-point retelling with stylized, brightly colored oil paintings that playfully echo forms and faces from early masks and sculpture without being too abstract for a child's comprehension. This story is VERY close to the traditional Taino story of how the sea began. The differences are subtle (bow and arrow instead of bones in the gourd, for example) and I believe they are done to make the story more child-friendly; namely for younger children. I love the artwork and all three of my kids (ages 3-7) enjoyed it!

The art of this beautiful book helps tell the ancient tale.

George Crspo's book have always been a good source for my storytelling projects--- the illustrations are delightful, true to subject matter yet easy enough for young readers to grasp what is happening. I believe all teachers or parents interested in the history of Puerto Rico and of the Tainos who were here, in the Antilles, way before Columbus arrived---should have a copy of this delightful legend on "How the Sea Began".

Amy King has a class on Craftsy that launched me into spinning, and this book is just as clear and concise as her class. I recommend purchasing both and using them in tandem if you're just starting.I also recommend buying a double treadle model with the option of both single and double drive. I ended up with the classic Saxony style wheel, made by Kromski. It's the Symphony in mahogany finish. I named her Twyla, old Saxon for evening star (my name is Eve Starr so it's perfect! It also means twined or twisted).I also recommend YouTube for lots of reviews of wheels and spinning. Think twice before buying an antique wheel, by the way. You want precision, easily replaceable parts, and support.

This book is great! It's got fabulous photos-and jam packed with great tips. I had been spinning for a year and a half when I bought it. I wasn't a newbie-and there was alot to learn from it. I still refer to it!. It's a great little primer for anyone who spins yarn.I loved the "Properties Of Fiber" section-really handy! There's many knitted swatch examples-which is brilliant. The pre-drafting section shows six swatches! Also examples of yarn spun.It explains the basics, and expands from there...bias, energized yarns, low twist, it even covers self striping (a technique I love). There's oodles of great tips, stuff I didn't know about dyeing (and I've been dyeing fiber for 20 years!). Great book for your spinning library :)

Spin Control is a good place to start if you want to *start* learning about the various types of yarn you can spin and don't want to spend much money. If you want a more prolific book that will last you a lot longer with many more varieties of yarn to spin, I would recommend The Spinners Book of Yarn Designs. I had looked forward with much anticipation to this book by the Spunky Eclectic lady. Alas, although most of the spinning information in this book is accurate, there is nothing new or spunky here.The information about pre-drafting is a bit muddled as it seems to confuse splitting a roving, tops or other fiber preparation with actually drafting, or drawing out. Some of the text does not match the photography and some of the photos of yarns do not match the knitted samples. However, this is probably attributable to editing errors.The author does introduce lots of unusual possibilities for plying and cabling; lots of stimulation there. Also, the photography is luscious.All in all, a pretty good book for beginners but I prefer Judith MacKenzie McCuin's The Intentional Spinner or Mabel Ross' The Essentials of Yarn Design for Handspinners.

Like many spinners, I really looked forward to this book, and so far I have enjoyed the eye-candy, and read the text with interest.Fortunately, I'm not a newbie spinner, because some of the basic editing and proof-reading errors can only confuse the inexperienced, who will not recognise the errors as such at all.This is embarrassing for the publishing house concerned, as well as the author, and dooms the book to be one of those you read, then return to the local library or put up for resale on ebay.This is a pity as its written in a friendly and enjoyable style, and is thorough in setting out basic procedures, something we often forget about. The pictures are great, and I appreciated the section on sitting correctly at the wheel, as well as the illustrated detail on the great debate about woolen and worsted.The best feature of the book? The knitted samples from the different drafting and spinning techniques used, particularly as I am not an experienced knitter. This alone would have earned the book 5 stars if it wasn't for the sloppy and rushed editing. Read before you buy!

I am a beginner spinner, and have taken a class. This beautiful book helps to reinforce what I learned in class, and is a wonderful reference for when I don't remember things. It also takes me beyond the class, and into new areas of spinning. I do recommend this one.

Written for the experienced handspun, not a novice. Like so , many of these books it needed a beta tester. Someone in its target audienc to read, review and edit.

I am new to spinning. This clearly written book provided not only the essentials that started me on my journey, it provides wonderful instruction for making many types of yarn and therefor a good reference book to keep handy.
