Can Democracy Work?: A Short History of a Radical Idea, from Ancient Athens to Our World, by James Miller

Review

"What makes the book compelling is its focus on colorful thinkers, activists, and political leaders who lived and breathed the democratic moment throughout history, from Pericles and Socrates in ancient Athens to Woodrow Wilson and Vladimir Lenin in the early twentieth century. Miller shows that democracy’s ascent is best seen not as a gradual unfolding of a political principle driven by reason and moral destiny but rather as a grand roller coaster ride of struggle, revolution, and backlash. Today’s populist outbursts look quite ordinary alongside this history." ―G. John Ikenberry, Foreign Affairs"The strength of this book lies . . . in the exquisite portraits it paints of characters who stand behind the immortalized Pericles, Robespierre, and Thomas Jefferson . . . [Miller] forces the reader to sit up and realize that history isn’t a definitive grayed parchment beyond reproach, but actually a living force constantly capable of new interpretation and meaning in our current world. . . Like the ekklesia in Athens, the constituent assembly in Versailles, and the soviet in Petrograd – Can Democracy Work? offers insightful context on how our own body politic will survive these turbulent times." ―John Colin Marston, The Christian Science Monitor“This is a bold, eloquent, and utterly convincing history of what democracy has meant and should mean―from the Assembly of ancient Greece to the anti-Trump resistance. James Miller has produced one of the wisest reflections on the glories and limits of popular rule I have ever read."―Michael Kazin, author of The Populist Persuasion: An American History“Democracy has always been at the center of James Miller’s career, whether he was investigating the sublime theories of the Enlightenment or the street politics of the 1960s. Now, at the very moment of democracy’s apparent endangerment, one of its best friends offers up the most capacious and inspiring history of it ever composed. From the Greeks to the present, Miller’s light touch and profound insight join each other on every page to make this a truly indispensable work for the present crisis.” ―Samuel Moyn, author of Not Enough: Human Rights in an Unequal World“No one is better qualified to wrestle with the riddle of democracy than James Miller, which is why I have been eagerly awaiting this brilliant and necessary book. Can Democracy Work? is an eloquent, clear-eyed account of democracy’s myriad challenges. This concise and compelling history deserves to be read and debated by all who still dare to dream of a society of equals. These pages left me feeling better prepared and reinvigorated to work toward a more democratic future.” ―Astra Taylor, director of What is Democracy? and author of The People’s Platform“James Miller, who has illuminated democracy's radical possibilities, now offers some sharp reflections on how those possibilities have fared over the centuries. At a moment when the very meaning of the word is up for grabs, Miller brings us back to philosophical essentials as forged by contingency, contradiction, and human folly. Refreshing and unsettling, here is some political intelligence in a dark and confusing time.” ―Sean Wilentz, author of The Rise of American Democracy“Distinguished historian of ideas James Miller’s short history of democracy and its different meanings is both compulsive and compulsory reading for our sometimes shockingly disenchanted times. Ever optimistic, Miller remains enamored of his native United States’s striking experiment in cosmopolitan self-governance, and stands proudly and persuasively tall for liberal―and democratic―ideals.” ―Paul Cartledge, author of Democracy: A Life“This sharp, spirited, engaged intellectual history of democracy, including its recent and often loose coupling with liberalism, combines an appraisal of both inherent and situational pitfalls with an appreciation of redemptive possibilities. If democracy is protean, what matters, this rich work teaches, is the quality of our normative choices and institutional imagination.” ―Ira I. Katznelson, author of Fear Itself: The New Deal and the Origins of Our Time". . . An attractively broad and accessible account of democracy from the Greeks to the present day. . .[guides] readers through the mass of difficult material with enviable clarity . . . [offers] impressive new evidence and analyses." ―David A. Bell, New York Review of Books "Engaging ....I’m particularly drawn to Miller’s investigation of a concept that most of us think we understand. As Miller demonstrates, “democracy” deserves a second look." ―Stan Persky, Dooney's Cafe

Miller's engaging voice doesn't prepare you for the insight or shock that comes from penetrating the surface of this idea, this attribute, this system, this brand on whose surface we've lived. But his writing makes it easy to press on as his narrative shreds assumptions and polemics, letting voices of the time tell the story, from Athens to the French and American revolutions. And yes, why is the word 'populist' tainted? And what about these demagogues, ancient and modern orange ones? If ever you've muttered "I love humanity, it's people I can't stand," you may find in this book you are not alone.

The ascent of the populist, authoritarian and generally disruptive governing style of Donald J. Trump in his latest starring role as “President of the United States” has rightfully generated substantial concern about the future of the "democratic experiment" and the entire notion of "government of laws, not men". Is a "government by the people, for the people, and of the people" possible? Did it ever really exist? In "Can Democracy Work?” historian James Miller has crafted a provocative, intellectually challenging history and analysis of this ideal form of government, extending from its advent in ancient Athens, through the American and French Revolutions, up to the present date. This short book on a very big topic is intellectually compelling and interesting."Can Democracy Work?” has an undercurrent of pessimism (or, if you prefer, realism). The author conveys the impression that democracy is a political Zeno's Paradox: no matter how close seekers of this model of governance might approach the democratic "ideal" (however defined), it's never actually achieved, nor can it be. Why not? Human nature. Miller cites Walter Lippmann, “The individual man does not have opinions on all public affairs. He does not know how to direct public affairs. He does not know what is happening, why it is happening, what ought to happen. I cannot imagine how he could know, and there is not the least reason for thinking, as mystical democrats have thought, that the compounding of individual ignorances in masses of people can produce a continuous directing force in public affairs…[common interests] can be managed only by a specialized class…” (The Phantom Public). He also paraphrases Robert Michel’s “Iron Law of Oligarchy”, this being an insight into the German Social Democratic Party (circa 1911) that still rings true: “…the SPD was an institution ostensibly dedicated to the spread of democracy in all areas of social life but it was in fact controlled by a torpid bureaucracy run by a tiny elite.” The whole notion that the average citizen can and will contribute meaningfully to governance (i.e. “participatory democracy”) can be dismissed with a pithy aphorism attributed to Oscar Wilde, “The trouble with socialism is it takes too many evenings”. Hence, the devolution of democratic governance into a small ruling cadre of elites that’s more or less responsive to a more or less engaged, more or less knowledgeable and informed citizenry. The late John Adams wrote “there has never been a democracy yet that did not commit suicide. Governance seemingly demands a technocratic and selfless political class ” due to the immensely complicated nature of statecraft. It doesn't look too hopeful in that regard yet one hopes that deciders act for the common good and, if they fail do so both responsively and responsibly, the bosses will be subject to recall and orderly replacement. That's not happening.Given all this, the wave of authoritarian governments supplanting nascent democratic states in the EU and elsewhere isn’t surprising but it is expected and understandable as Miller implies. So too is the newly fashionable acceptance of "illiberal democracy" in certain circles here at home and abroad: the embrace of illiberal and authoritarian rulers exerts an understandable appeal. So does the revival of utopian socialism.Miller's cited authorities are used to maintain a baseline level of optimism. He accomplishes this by historical example and thoughtful sampling of works of great political thinkers from ancient times thorough the present. He wants the reader to understand that “this has happened before” so the current crisis of democracy suggests the “karmic cycle” is closing once again, maybe to be reborn in a better and purer form. Maybe though John Adams was right about democracy. As history and Homer Simpson declare, “Well, duh!”

Can Democracy Work? A Short History of a Radical Idea, from Ancient Athens to Our World by James Miller is a history of democracy in its various forms throughout history. Miller Miller is an American writer and academic. He is known for writing about Michel Foucault, philosophy as a way of life, social movements, popular culture, intellectual history, eighteenth century to the present; radical social theory and history of political philosophy. He currently teaches at The New School.Democracy* is a term that has been used for so long and in so many ways that it has lost its meaning. North Korea claims to be a Democratic People's Republic. Russia is an authoritarian regime with superficial democratic fringe. Greece is the so-called cradle of democracy, but how democratic was it really? What percentage of the population were allowed to participate? Positions of authority at times were chosen by lot since elections were seen as corrupt. Even today, in America, elections are about money. LBJ was successful because of people in Congress who owed him favors. Political machines tainted American democracy.America's founding fathers were not in favor of democracy and looked to the Roman Republic as a source for stable government rather than Athens. The original federal government was small and did little compared to day's government. Democratic types of government work best in small groups. In large groups mob rule and the tyranny of the majority are likely to take place. Divided government slows the actions of mob rule somewhat. Major events can still trigger rapid action. 9/11 triggered a piece of legislation called the Patriot Act. Legislators admitted not reading it before voting for it. This would not have happened without the act of terror. It created a type of "mob rule" or general will, as Rousseau would have called it, that bucked the system of government.Miller also includes one of the maligned Western political thinkers, Machiavelli. Machiavelli was a republican and believed in representational government and more importantly, he believed in citizen militias. If the citizens had a stake in their government they would be willing to defend it. Inclusion into governing has been debated limited and expanded and limited again. White (or native) men who held land were usually given the right to vote. Sometimes military service was also a condiction. Does expanding the number of voters help or hinder the selection of a good leader. Would a larger pool of voters or a small pool of educated land-owning voters provide better results? That question still haunts the idea of democratic rule.Leaders in France, England, and Russia are also looked at in the historic sense along with American leaders like Andrew Jackson. Our current president is a fan of Andrew Jackson and the two do have much in common. Miller, in a well-cited work, discusses the history of democracy and its various forms in mainly in Athens, France, and the United States. Many misconceptions and inaccuracies are cleared up as well as detailing the French revolutions. Well written and extremely informative.*Democracy used in its widest sense to include direct democracy and representational democracies. Likewise, small "r" republican is used to describe a supporter of a republic, representational democracy.

I decided to help pump up the local economy and so I visited N.O. recently. This book was a very good guide to how the restaurants are operating here in 2007. I also drove through the devastated sections of N.O., and this book fairly points out that while the French Quarter is very approachable, there are big sections of the city that are still devastated, as it was very clear to see on the drive. Somehow its gotta get the gas stations, food stores, local eateries, and other businesses set up, before the housing can feel good in moving back. Or does the housing have to come back first before the gas stations, food stores, local eateries, and so on will move in. How DO YOU reestablish a neighborhood with homes and the businesses to support the neighborhood? What's the critical mass that's needed? But I've gotten away from the review, sorry, but I hope you realize that what I listed above is important for this city and its reemergence. 5 stars to this book for being a fair, accurate, thorough report on the restaurants (I am not commenting on the night life, the restaurants were enough for me) that you will experience today when you go to N.O., based on my sample of 12 or so of the places listed herein. I very much enjoyed my visit and suggest you give N.O. a try if you can, and that you use this book to help guide you to where you want to eat.I have no financial interest in any product I review.

First of all, ten stars for Malala! Ten stars for her health, her stamina, her courage, and her brilliance! But truth be known this was a difficult book to read. I think it needed better editing. I kept getting lost in the timeline. For example, the way I read it, Malala was fourteen when she was shot. I knew that wasn't the case. Also, the first part of the book was so choppy that I almost gave up reading the book. I only continued because I wanted to learn about this fascinating teen.History has never been my favorite subject. It wasn't until a brilliant teacher in college did I begin paying attention. Let's face it, history is about men and their wars. Women are rarely the stars. So when a book about a female who is making history, gets bogged down in the wars, I started losing interest. When the war affects Malala and her family, then I felt involved again. Then I was glad for the bit of a history lesson that was set up in the book. Wish there had been a smoother way to move from personal story to the region's history.I hope, hope, hope that Malala writes more books. I hope she finds friends. I hope her mother can get on with her own education and can stand and give a few speeches of her own. I hope the family becomes more feminist so that mother can have her own life. I wish the family all the goodness life can give.

My 11-year old son read this and was so touched and inspired by Malala's story. He normally only likes to read sci-fi, so I was shocked when he came back to me after reading the book with tears in his eyes, saying how grateful and inspired this book was for him. Nothing has ever moved him the way this story did. I highly recommend this story to any Tweens and teens. It is sure to inspire empathy and understanding.

I checked the audiobook out from the library, forgetting that I had bought the ebook when it was on sale... because I'm that sort of person. As amused and annoyed as I was with myself when I realized this, I actually ended up getting a better experience with the book this way. Malala speaks at the beginning and end of the book, and there's her UN speech as well. So, the audio version is definitely worth listening to.It's pretty emotional, hearing about how so many children in Pakistan are unable to be educated because their poor and/or female. I think it was very important of her to point out that the biggest issue with the ignorance there is because of this lack of education. These people are studying their holy text, but aren't understanding the words. That's something to be said of all religions. It's scary what happens when the uneducated come into power and twist a holy book to their desires. And knowing she stood up for her education despite the threats, she is amazing. Truly.I introduced my 5 year old son to the story of Malala last year, we own a couple picture books about her. I wanted him to know how important it is for all people to be given the opportunity to be educated. Also, I want to raise him to understand that there is no type of person better than another - people of all races, religions, genders, etc. all deserve the same opportunities. To me, the worst part of this was knowing there was a period of time when her father regretted letting her choose an education over her safety. I cannot even imagine the grief her parents went through.I've been reading a lot of non fiction lately, and I've noticed there is a lot of rambling in them. This book didn't have that. It is a fascinating story and I am so glad she lived through being shot. I wish I could afford to go to her talk in Houston, I expect it is going to be great.

This book is an autobiography of Malala Yousafzai. She wrote about her experience in Pakistan and the effect that the Taliban had on her, her family, and the society. She’s very courageous as a national leader. As a young woman in a country where individual groups and traditional civilians want her silence, Malala didn’t hold anything back when talking about her story. She is authentic and bold. The book also had her parents perspective on the situation in which they went through. Her parents had a significant impact on her and her leadership as of today.I thought that the book was thorough. The story was in chronological order; it made it easier for the readers to follow. She also gave a short but essential background of the society and of her parents which all had affected her and the person she became today. If the reader didn’t know about the culture or her parent's history, they wouldn’t understand why people are inspired by her or what the current situation in Pakistan had on her. She didn’t mention much about her two brothers. Knowing about them would allow us to see their perspective on her as a sister as she is straying from the norm.An important theme that I found compelling is persistence. Malala didn’t give up her passion for education and even risked her life to be educated. Malala values education and school not only for herself but all the girls and boys. When the Taliban bombed schools and forced girls to stay home instead of going to schools, Malala tried everything in her power (interviews, diary, documentary) to be able to attend classes again. Even when shot in the head, she didn’t give in. She turned a local issue into a worldwide discussion.Another theme is gender roles in Pakistan. Women aren't treated equally as men, but instead, the society represses women. Malala grew up with parents that are more liberal which allow her to have more freedom. That is not typically in Pakistan. Malala came to the leader not just for the people in Pakistan, but for all (girls/children) around the world. Because she is a young woman and fight for her rights to be educated, she is slowly changing the society and their view on gender roles.I truly enjoyed the book. Knowing Malala's story made me admire her even though I’ve never met her. I’m also motivated and is inspired to better my education and keep on pushing myself even when it is difficult. She is a role model for everyone. Women, girls, and boys will enjoy reading this book. They could benefit from reading this book by being more motivated, courageous, and to speak up for what is right. Also, anyone who wants to know more about life in Pakistan and Malala’s experience in that society should read it. The book thoroughly talked about her experience in Pakistan and her work.

Where Is Niagara Falls?   It was a beautiful, hot summer afternoon in 1960. Seven-year-old Roger Woodward was excited. He and his older sister Deanne were about to go on a boat ride. It was Roger’s first time ever in a boat. They were going out onto the Niagara River in a motorboat that was just big enough to hold three people.   “Remember to wear your life jacket,” Roger’s father called out to him. His father knew they needed to be careful. They were going on a river that led to the biggest, most awesome waterfall in America.   The man who owned the boat was a family friend named Jim Honeycutt. Jim was a strong swimmer and lifeguard. He knew all about how to stay safe on the river. He made sure Roger kept his life jacket on.   As they passed under a bridge, Roger asked if he could steer the boat. It was a bad idea to let Roger steer right then. The boat was nearing a dangerous part of the river. Most boaters knew to turn around there. The river was full of rocks and rapids that led to the edge of Niagara Falls.   But for some reason, Jim said yes.   Suddenly, the boat hit something hard under the water. The engine screamed. A piece of the motor was broken. They couldn’t drive the boat away from the rocks. The rapids were pulling them toward the edge!   Jim grabbed some oars and began to row as hard as he could. He shouted to Deanne to put on the only other life jacket in the boat. Powerful waves tossed them up and down. When a huge one hit the boat, all three were thrown into the swirling, raging rapids.   Roger tried to hold on to Jim, but the water ripped him away.   People on the shore saw what was happening. They ran up and down, but no one could figure out a way to help.   Roger felt himself being bounced against rocks. Then he was dragged over the edge of the gigantic falls, like a fly being flushed down a toilet.   No one had ever survived going over Niagara Falls without something—a boat or a barrel—to protect them.   But somehow, a miracle happened! Roger found himself floating in the water below the falls. A tourist boat happened to be nearby. Someone spotted Roger’s red life jacket and fished him out of the water. He was saved!   Roger became famous that day. He was the first person ever to survive going over Niagara Falls without protection. When he grew up, he became a sailor. He loved the water and even joined the navy. His sister survived that day, too. She was pulled out of the river before ever reaching the falls.   But Jim Honeycutt died in the terrible accident. Sadly, he was not the first—or last—to lose his life to the biggest, most awesome, and most dangerous waterfall in America.

Occasionally I would read what my son is reading so I can monitor what his reading level is or just to learn something. Upon his very high recommendation, I read this book. Wow! He was right! This is a really good book. It begins with how Niagra Falls was formed, discovery by Native Americans, and then later by curious explorers. As it became a tourist attraction, more people came as well as daredevils who tried to thrill visitors. Harnessing the water's energy by George Westinghouse and Nikola Tesla was also discussed. There are some really good, detailed pencil drawings and nice color photographs and timeline at the end. The text is written at a Grade 3 and above level. My son said it was easy to understand. After I read it, we talked about it, and decided we both learned a lot.

Great biography series that all kids will enjoy. My students (4th grade) can't seem to put them down. I've had them in my room for the last few years and they just eat them up. The content is easy to understand and it provides great information on each person/topic along with a timeline in the back. Great for parents and teachers alike.

I ordered this book for my daughter right before our trip to Niagara falls. She found it interested and was repeating things she learned in this book during our trip.

A perfect read for your family!! We read this book before we visited Niagara Falls and loved it! Great information and an easy read.

Vibrant colors, information is simplistic; not worth the price.

What an interesting and accessible book! By the time we went to Niagara Falls, my kid rattled off trivia like a tour guide!

Great detail. Easy to read. So packed with information.

Arrived a little early and looks GREAT!

Born Fighting: How the Scots-Irish Shaped America

Review

“Born Fighting is a bombshell—or else the most brilliant battle flare ever launched by a book. James Webb reveals the all-but-invisible ethnic group that has created the core beliefs of democracy American-style: our rights come from God, not the Government; all of us are born equal, and “born aristocrats” don’t exist; and tread on either of those two truths, and we’ll fight you down to the last unbroken hyoid bone. The Scots-Irish, for such is their name, have fought all our wars for us, including Vietnam. James Webb was there, and he can count. He has written not only an engrossing story but also an important work of sociological history in the tradition of the great James Graham Leyburn.”—Tom Wolfe

From the Inside Flap

In his first work of nonfiction, bestselling novelist James Webb tells the epic story of the Scots-Irish, a people whose lives and worldview were dictated by resistance, conflict, and struggle, and who, in turn, profoundly influenced the social, political, and cultural landscape of America from its beginnings through the present day. More than 27 million Americans today can trace their lineage to the Scots, whose bloodline was stained by centuries of continuous warfare along the border between England and Scotland, and later in the bitter settlements of England's Ulster Plantation in Northern Ireland. Between 250,000 and 400,000 Scots-Irish migrated to America in the eighteenth century, traveling in groups of families and bringing with them not only long experience as rebels and outcasts but also unparalleled skills as frontiersmen and guerrilla fighters. Their cultural identity reflected acute individualism, dislike of aristocracy and a military tradition, and, over time, the Scots-Irish defined the attitudes and values of the military, of working class America, and even of the peculiarly populist form of American democracy itself. "Born Fighting is the first book to chronicle the full journey of this remarkable cultural group, and the profound, but unrecognized, role it has played in the shaping of America. Written with the storytelling verve that has earned his works such acclaim as "captivating . . . unforgettable" (the" Wall Street Journal on "Lost Soliders), Scots-Irishman James Webb, Vietnam combat veteran and former Naval Secretary, traces the history of his people, beginning nearly two thousand years ago at Hadrian's Wall, when the nation of Scotland was formed northof the Wall through armed conflict in contrast to England's formation to the south through commerce and trade. Webb recounts the Scots' odyssey--their clashes with the English in Scotland and then in Ulster, their retreat from one war-ravaged land to another. Through engrossing chronicles of the challenges the Scots-Irish faced, Webb vividly portrays how they developed the qualities that helped settle the American frontier and define the American character. "Born Fighting shows that the Scots-Irish were 40 percent of the Revolutionary War army; they included the pioneers Daniel Boone, Lewis and Clark, Davy Crockett, and Sam Houston; they were the writers Edgar Allan Poe and Mark Twain; and they have given America numerous great military leaders, including Stonewall Jackson, Ulysses S. Grant, Audie Murphy, and George S. Patton, as well as most of the soldiers of the Confederacy (only 5 percent of whom owned slaves, and who fought against what they viewed as an invading army). It illustrates how the Scots-Irish redefined American politics, creating the populist movement and giving the country a dozen presidents, including Andrew Jackson, Teddy Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Ronald Reagan, and Bill Clinton. And it explores how the Scots-Irish culture of isolation, hard luck, stubbornness, and mistrust of the nation's elite formed and still dominates blue-collar America, the military services, the Bible Belt, and country music. Both a distinguished work of cultural history and a human drama that speaks straight to the heart of contemporary America, "Born Fighting reintroduces America to its most powerful, patriotic, and individualistic cultural group--one too often ignored or taken forgranted.

James Webb and the Philosophical FairiesNow, I have special loving feelings toward James Webb. I elected him to the U. S. Senate with my $100, the only time I have sent money out of state to a political candidate for anything but the highest office. I read and re-read BORN FIGHTING in the little room next to my computer room, understanding, sympathizing, and a very few times envying (the times when he hears stories from his older kinfolks). I know how risky he was in describing Reconstruction, and I sympathize, because I have lived through the fierce self-righteousness of fanatical Political Correctness in the academy. But something seemed wrong on 244--apparently the same page in the hardback and the paperback, if Amazon.com is right--seemed nasty, cheap. Something did not seem to jibe with the Jim Webb I admire:THE OCCUPIERS, THE POLITICAL REEDUCATORS WHO THIS TIME CALLED THEMSELVES RADICAL RECONSTRUCTIONISTS, THE PHILOSOPHICAL FAIRIES, THE CARPETBAGGER BUSINESSPEOPLE WITH THEIR GRAND PLANS AND SPECIAL DEALS . . . .Now, my James Webb would never have said "the philosophical fairies."What James Webb must have written or meant to write was "the philosophical Pharisees." I know exactly what he meant, and he did not mean fairies, folks. He meant Pharisees.

I picked this up from BookBub for an obscenely low price, having had it recommended to me by my friend Keith. I’m half Irish (“Potato Irish” not Scots-Irish), but my maternal grandmother came from County Antrim in North Ireland and believe you me she hated the English, so there’s some commonality, but I’m getting ahead of myself.Mr. Webb’s thesis is that is that many U.S. citizens are descendants of the Scots-Irish, which originated in Scotland, marked by intense tribal loyalty and a willingness to fight against big government of any sort. So to quote Mr. Webb: “(The) journey (of the Scots-Irish)…has been not simply one of hardship or disappointment, but of frequent and bitter conflict. These conflicts, from which they have never in two thousand years of history retreated, have followed a historically consistent cycle of, among other things, a values-based combativeness, an insistent egalitarianism, and a refusal to be dominated from above, no matter the cost.”The history of these people dates back to the times when the Celtic tribes resisted the power of the Roman Empire, and eventually centered in Scotland. The prominence and importance of William Wallace (“Braveheart”) and Robert the Bruce in the development of the Scottish people is certainly given credit. The joining of four intense and bellicose independent tribal peoples to fight the English seems a daunting task, but it was accomplished. Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai’s attempts to bring the country’s fourteen tribal groups together certainly seems apropos in this context. Many of the Scottish people immigrated to Ulster, in Northern Ireland, where they differentiated themselves from both the “potato Irish” Catholics and the English Protestants, becoming fundamentalist Calvinists, and fighting against religious persecution and England’s futile and violent attempts to bring this group into the fold. Those who left Ireland for America ended up not going to the large commerce centers but instead sought out the primitive and dangerous frontier of the remote Appalachians. Many of them made their way to the American South, also challenging both the Government and the frontier. Daniel Boone, among others, is set up as an example of such a person of Scotch-Irish lineage.Again due to their willingness to fight for individuality, Mr. Webb indicates that up to 40% of the American militia during the Revolutionary War was made up of Sots-Irish. Many were also soldiers for the South during the Civil War. And, considering the recent conflict over the symbolism of the Confederate flag, Mr. Webb’s contention that what is now pejoratively termed “Redneck” is a continuation of the anti-government, tribal mentality that made the Scots-Irish survive. To quote Mr. Webb: “Blamed for slavery although only a minute percentage actually owned slaves, they suffered for generations after the Civil War due to the twin calamities of Reconstruction and an ever-increasing seclusion of the Appalachian and Allegheny Mountains.”But it didn’t stop there: Many Scots-Irish have been members of the Military through every armed conflict the U.S. has had. And for their motivation, well, Mr. Webb describes it as related to “Celtic ties of kinship:” “From the earliest known history of the Celts, military service was viewed not simply as an obligation but as a high honor. Fighting for – and alongside – the tribal leader (or, later, the Great Captain, or as now, one’s branch of service) brought one into the family.”Mr. Webb spends an entire chapter on Andrew Jackson, military man and President, as not only an example of the Scots-Irish culture but as a person who influenced the more populist movements in America. Mr. Webb quotes historian Walter Russell Mead: “(the Jacksonians believe) that the government should do everything in its power to promote the well-being – political, moral, economic – of the folk community.”This summary only scratches the surface of the rich and complex history of this hardy people, and certainly helps explain Mr. Webb’s pride in his family history of military service and political service, as well as some of his more controversial outlooks as a contemporary Presidential candidate. I greatly enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it heartily, no matter your ethnic background or political leanings.

This quite simply is an essential work for the understanding of American history and culture. It is a delightful dip into the history of my own people as well, which is a bonus for me and those of my ilk. I did find the last few chapters very moving if a bit too personal to James Webb's personal experience. I found my self tearing up from the power of his family narrative. I am convinced that I now understand parts of American history more fully than I did before. We cannot grasp the totally of the American experience without understanding this remarkable book.

This was my starting point in pursuing an interest from my late mother in genealogy. The book gave me a road guide into the pre American Revolution back country Ulster Scots and how a French sir name (Chavous) became intertwined with Ulster Scot ancestors. It also provided hints into my political and social attitudes whether from environment or heredity, I do not know. The fact remains that it was the impetus that has taken me to extensive reading into Western European History (which I hated in high school and college) and trips to Scotland and Ireland. I have purchased three copies of this book that I have given to people that were interested. Anyone whose ancestors that traveled the "Great Wagon Road" must read this book by a very talented writer.

Very well worth the read, but understand that Jim Webb's writing can romanticize the culture he is speaking about. Being Scotts-Irish-English-Native American from a Kentucky area family, this book made me very proud of my heritage and placed a desire in me to know and be able to articulate my family's past. However, there are many cultures that progressed through history with tumultuous pasts. Also, stylistically, Jim Webb's citations are only numbered as you read, so if you actually want to know the source you have to go look in the back of the book. It would be nice to have the work mentioned in-text. I know that seems small, but I've been reading too much Mark Levin and David Barton recently and, when you're use to it, you notice when something that convenient is gone.
