I was disappointed in this book, expecting that it would be mostly about spinning from a real master. Instead, over half is only about fiber prep. While I agree that properly prepared fiber is the first and most important requirement for good spinning, I have lots and lots of other sources for the information contained here on that subject--and what I needed was a really, really good detailed and focused book on the actual spinning methods so that I can hone what my fingers are doing. I long ago had to decide that I didn't have time to do a lot of fiber prep myself so I focus on buying good materials. This glossed over what I needed most, what to do with sliver or top when it's in my hands and, again, it seemed like it was assembled from a few articles extracted from Spin-Off magazine rather than expanded and comprehensive discussion. The pictures only gave a so-so idea of what you should be doing with your hands. It just wasn't up to my expectations.
Nobody on earth knows more about spinning than Judith. I loved the stories, her humor, and all of the good advice and knowledge she passes along in this book. The charm she exhibits in her videos is evident in the book, making it easy to read and learn from a master textile artist. This is not for beginners although I think they will get a lot out of it, especially as their skills grow and their spinning reaches maturity. I've been spinning as long as Judith has and I found a lot of good things I had never heard of from other teachers through 35+ years of spinning and taking workshops from all the best teachers. (Sadly, I've just never been able to get into a class with Judith, though I have not given up.)
This book is a good overview of the whole spinning process. I gained some confidence from it when I was a beginner, but haven't been back to it now that I've been spinning for several years. She doesn't do a great job of explaining why and when to use certain techniques, and I would have liked larger pictures across the board.Her real weakness is anything to do with wheel mechanics. She either has only a tenuous grasp of the physics involved, or is very careless in her speech and writing. Either way, I find it extremely detrimental to beginners, and irritating beyond belief to anyone with a technical background. Interweave really needs to get a good technical editor for her books, and especially her videos.The DVD is just clips from "The Gentle Art of Plying". If you thought you were going to get video of the spinning techniques in the book, you'll be disappointed.
When I grow up, I want to be a holistic, intentional spinner. Well written reference and friendly - almost as if she sitting right here talking about the items covered. First part of book discusses fibers and describes characteristics - animal, plant, and man-made. No great details, but lots of interesting information. Last chapter in this section has information about fiber identification,characteristics, and measuring devices. Second part of book covers the basic preparation and spinning techniques in a very user friendly manner. There are a few projects for skill building and a CD that is very helpful to watch along with reading about how to do it. I would highly recommend the purchase of this book.
A wonderful, easy to understand book to keep as a reference. Did you know you can make clothes from fabric spun from nettles? Nettles! Well, not from the stinging part, but from the stalks.
This is a comprehensive guide for the spinner. I have been spinning for a matter of weeks, and I found much in this book and dvd that was helpful. Judith is a terrific teacher; her gentle voice on the dvd instills confidence. I am reading the book, cover to cover; I don't want to miss a morsel of information. It is that good!
This book was highly recommended to me as a new spinner. It was worth the cost.
This is a great book and DVD. However the DVD is defective - the content under Finishing (last segment of the DVD) is the same as the content under Novelty Yarns (an earlier segment). Of course, it is 31 days after the book was purchased so amazon won't stand behind the product they sold. Not. happy.
