Even some of the examples and descriptions he gives in this books is identical to the ones used in The Happiness Trap. The Happiness Trap is the best book that I've read all year and since then I've picked up other books on ACT. However, The Confidence Gap just seems like the same ol' book to me. I'm a little disappointed since I really appreciate ACT. I was hoping for something new. This would be a great first book if you are new to ACT. But if you have read the Happiness Trap then I would stay away from this one.

I'm a junior in college, well off, and in no sort of life-trouble. I've just never had confidence in myself. I never felt like I was ready to take charge of my life, have never dated, and was always one of the awkward kids who couldn't socialize with new people because my throat would fail to open and my tongue twists on itself every 3 words or so. I was fine with friends and family, most of the time at least (sometimes my parents made me ashamed of myself, despite them doing a single thing or saying a single word. I would simply anxiously think to myself "my parents probably even think I'm weird.")3 days ago I felt I had hit some sort of rock bottom level of motivation and simultaneously had the highest levels of generalized anxiety I had ever felt. I have always had some degree of anxiety since my teenage years or maybe even earlier, but recently I felt like I was losing control of my mind, losing control of the voice inside my head. Any efforts I made to improve my mental condition were met with self-doubt, I would give up on my efforts, and my confidence would drop even lower. I recognized that I was at a point where I had the potential to spiral into a depression, because my anxiety was beginning to rise at an exponential rate.I must admit I haven't read a book in years. I'm too lazy, reading is too boring, I don't like being told what to do, etc. All of these types of thoughts were preventing me from ever doing it, but I still passed through classes easily somehow, never improving my work ethic, or feeling proud of accomplishing something like reading a book.Well, I read this book in 3 days. One day I woke up and couldn't fall back asleep, at approx 6 am. I get up at 11 or later most of the time so this was waaaay to early to get things done. But I couldn't fall back asleep and then my feelings of anxiety as usual just switched back on. Immediately I was just done with that feeling. It was getting worse, after all.I went on Amazon, searched for "confidence books", found this one, didn't read any reviews but saw it had a good rating, bought it for Kindle, put it on my tablet, and started reading. It was a book that I trusted myself to at least open, and as soon as I did, I read some interesting stuff. I first read about how we are NOT our thoughts, we aren't all the culminations of the demands and actions of a dictator inside our head. Like some sort of mental trap, we have stuck ourselves in cycling lies such as a false understanding of motivation ("I'm waiting until I feel motivated to start running."), a false understanding of confidence ("I'm waiting until I feel confident before I try dating."), and a false understanding of fear ("I need to be fearless when I go up on that stage.")I'm trying to stop myself from typing too much. I'm just so excited, because something I have never thought I would ever type into some sort of product review is, this has turned my life around. I redefined my understanding of confidence, have practiced the well researched psychologist-backed methods for defusing from your own thoughts to fully focus on what the senses and what is happening in the present, and finally I can see some sort of path towards improving my confidence. I am not saying after reading the book I am immediately super confident and can make myself do whatever I want to to improve my life, I'm saying I now have the tools and enough understanding of the human psyche that I can actually feel some sort of direction in my life.I fully committed to what the book said. I was always a person who would just skip the details in most tasks. I didn't even read books before. But somehow, before I was reading the book, I had that stroke of anger, about my anxiety, that I felt propelled me into taking action, not this book specifically. But, thanks to specifically this book, I now know how I can CAUSE this to happen, not wait. Because I made an effort while using Russ's methods, and after I recognized that through his writing itself he was actually teaching us the basics of defusing from your thoughts (which blew my mind by the way, thank you Russ), I got totally engaged and focused in the book, and then the book taught me about focus itself, and how all we have to do to be focused and have to peak performance is to defuse and be mindful, and now it's just like everything makes sense. My head is clear. I didn't stop my thoughts, that's not what it's about. It is about truly understand that, once again, we are NOT our thoughts.Last I will mention, without shame, that I had tried using drugs and alcohol to cope with anxiety over the course of about 2 years. This had definitely contributed to making my anxiety worse. I say without shame because I can now admit that I know it was wrong to use them to try and improve my confidence. It was wrong not because I was using illicit substances but because I had believed it to be the answer, and to believe the answer to improving my mentality and attitude towards myself was anything other than taking actual actions was one of the wrongest wrongs I have ever had commited in my life.Now I am moving on. I have properly set goals for myself, like "jog 30 mins tonight", not "be the confident attractive beast you always dreamed of being." And if my mind tells me not to do it, and I can clearly tell that not doing it would not help me, then I have the tools to work around the feelings of discomfort and thoughts of "I can't do it.". And I will keep using these tools in other parts of life, parts I have not yet delved into.I read a book for the first time in 3 years, and now I feel great.

Note: I listened to the audiobook with the book as a companion.It was such a great book that I have purchased 4 additional copies and send them to friends! Not sure how this book has been under the radar compared to other books of its category but in my opinion, it is by far the most practical book I have read in the realm of self help since "first thing first" by Covey circa 1994!The author explains concepts, gives personal examples, then gives exercises to readers/listeners. The book is an easy read but not easy to grasp. I probably listened to some chapters 5 -6 times. The book has a golden list of values that sets it apart from others. There are many concepts in the book to prepare you for the real world. I have found the following very useful so far:- Workability- Action first- Value based successIn the past 30 years, every decade, 1 or 2 books have been paramount to my personal growth and development, and "Confidence Gap" is definitely on this decade's list!PS: the narrator in the audio version has an amazing and captivating voice.

The “Banh Mi Vietnamese Sandwich Guide” by Nancy Nguyen is a good dive into the many wonderful variations you can make for this famous kind of Vietnamese sandwich. The author does a good job of explaining each aspect of the dish and the separate ingredients. The recipes themselves are written in a clear way that is easy to follow. I think the formatting of the chapters and type could be done a little more efficiently, but I do like the chapter that is organized by section based on the type of meat that the recipe uses. I also like the cover and photos but wish that there was a photo with each new type of sandwich. Overall, I enjoy how much detail the author goes into about this dish. It is evident that they have a great appreciation and understanding of this food. I cannot wait to try making my own Banh Mi!

The author breaks down not just the recipes but also the story behind each major ingredient. This method, although can seem lengthy and complex, allows the reader/cooker to understand the meaning behind the dish. For new chiefs like myself who attempt to follow recipes, but get lost in the process, another strong point in this book is how the author explains the texture of the dish as you cook it. This allows you to not only follow the science of the dish but involve your sense of feel to make sure you are going the right direction. Again, it can seem a little lengthy of course, but if you allow yourself to get lost in the culture behind the dish, you will be able to appreciate the meaning and it will make the consumption the much better. However, please don’t misunderstand me the book still present a classic cookbook standard. It just adds a little bit more to munch on.

If you are new to Bikram Yoga or want to improve your practice, buy this book or the blue book with Bikram and his former wife Rajashree on the cover.Both books are like taking a class taught by Bikram himself. Lots of fun. Plus, both books show & discuss perfect posture and reality posture (ie what you may be doing).I think every Bikram yogi should read this or the blue book to improve your practice, practice “the right way” and make sure you get 100% benefit from each posture and every class. Your time is precious, don’t waste it!Remember, when you try “the right way” you need only do 1% of the posture to get 100% benefit. One of the more beneficial forms of Yoga I have found for my body - Bikram Yoga is my Fountain of Youth.After 40 years of practicing Bikram Yoga, I speak from inner truth that my body loves and needs these specific asana (postures) performed in sequence every time to regain physical balance from the onslaught of toxicity in the air, food, water and stress caused by local / global social unrest. This regimen allows the total body mechanics to create muscuar and cellular memory through repetition. The postures are never boring as one becomes more ingrained and sensitive to how the postures feel in the body AND how we feel after we've completed the asanas to our best ability on any given day.To explore the history of Choudhury Bikram and how he came to create this 26-asana practice, one can appreciate his early beginnings and influencers such as Bishnu Ghosh, brother of Parahamsa Yogananda (Autobiography of a Yogi). While there are hundreds of Yoga postures, this practice focuses on 26, each scientifically chosen to reach every part of the body during a 90-minute session - creating and sustaining inner life force so we may acknowledge and share our life purpose with clarity, balance, determination, fortitude and strength.

So, Bikram yoga. this is the best yoga for a complete workout by far... Now, I have worked out in a bikram studio for about a year, but the times and distance did not work for me. So, what I did was order the complete CD from Bikramyoga.com it has bikram himself running you through the entire class, then I use the book for reference. I have a small room at home that I put a space heater and a warm humidifier in heat up the room to about 90degrees turn on the Cd and do my yoga workout at home.. if you have the chance to go to a studio at least once I suggest that you do that, because there are little nuances that the instructors go over that you don't get in a book or CD.. Now I have my hot Bikram yoga whenever I want at home. I love it.!

Very enjoyable book to read. The notes from class members are interesting, funny and helpful. The book has a lot of images also, which I liked. The images show you the "optimal" pose and then what is "likely" :) I found myself actually reading the whole thing, not just looking at the pictures - which is what I expected to do.

I've been practicing Bikram yoga for 3.5 months now, and I love it. Today was my 42 class (not that I love it so much I'm counting, or anything!). So, I ordered this book thinking it would give specific details on the postures, things like where you should be feeling the stretch in each posture, or what "drives" each posture. I thought this would help me tweak each pose, to maximize the benefits of each one. Instead, the book is very light on the postures and heavy on Bikram's thinking/philosophy. So, it's interesting, but not what I was hoping for. I just saw a book today called "Yoga Anatomy" and that might be more of what I'm looking for.

I was really expecting a DVD because I have been looking for a great yoga video. But after reading the introduction and importance of this particular style of yoga I am really impressed. He explains the importance of a heated room, and the baby steps for poses before going onto next pose, as well as all the spiritual /physical elements

I never went to Bikram, but bought this book. It is well written, with lots of funny references. Can be quite boring though, if you are trying to go through everything at once. A year later, I went to my first Bikram class. I finally realized what this book is about! I really enjoyed reading a few postures a day and learning in class. The book is different from the dialogue, but it is immensely helpful for beginners. Every time I'm in doubt about something, I can go back to the book and reference it. I now went to the classes for 3 months and feel quite confident. I'm still looking at the book from time to time for some help, and enjoy reading Bikram's quotes. I would definitely recommend this book!

The style is a bit annoying to read but the explanation of poses along with the (extremely dated) photos is very helpful especially for beginners.I read the book through once... then realized that it is broken up into 2 parts -- for each pose. The top portion is for advanced students who have a general idea of the poses. The bottom portion is for complete beginners. Although Bikram writes in the book that someone who has never taken a class can follow the book, I would highly disagree with that. I think you need to have gone to a few classes to get a general idea of the flow, then you can read about each poses and tips to get a deeper stretch/proper form.I wish they would have redone the photos for the updated copy. Now that I have read through it once, I find that I go back to it for reference for some of the poses I find more challenging. I would highly recommend this book.
