Harvest Season is that rarity among books -- a sequel as good as or better than the original book. In line with its name, Harvest Season picks up in late summer when Growing Season closed and carries us through the fall. We find Melinda well settled into her rented farm, temporary job, and rural community, but wrestling with her path ahead. She always knew that her country sojourn was to be short and that she'd soon return to her lucrative city career. As she nears the time of leaving behind her new friends and the peace she has found, she finds she sometimes wants to stay, but just can't see a way to make that happen. In the meantime, her life in this temporary situation continues, and she copes with both good and bad events. As with the first book, this is an easy read, beautifully written and quite evocative, a complex and satisfying story that keeps you coming back for more. Even though you might think you know how things are going to work out, Ms. Lageschulte's storytelling holds you until the very end. My only question is when we're going to see the next installment of this captivating saga. I hope it is soon!
First book in series Growing Season starts when Melinda lost her great job in Minneapolis, then her mom called and said her uncle had a heart attack so she packed up some clothes and headed back to Iowa to see her family. Her aunt asked her to help in the hardware store and she rented a house with farm animals. In Harvest Season, Melinda has fallen in love with the animals and living in the old family farmhouse, but Wilbur, the old man that owned the house was now thinking of moving back. Melinda knew she should move back to MN and get back to her life. Will she move back or is this home?
I loved this book! In Book 1, Melanie, an almost 40-year old woman loses her prestigious job in the city. She goes to the small rural town to help out her aunt after her uncle's heart attack. She rents a farmhouse nearby and learns to take care of and love the old house, the garden, and the resident animals. There is no implausible Prince charming galloping in to save Melinda. She must face her own problems, discover how she wants to live her life, and make her own decisions as to how best to do this...just like real women do! I spent several lovely afternoons with Books 1 and 2, and am pre-ordering Book 3 so I can continue enjoying Melinda's life on the farm and her interactions with the residents of Prosper, Iowa. The book is well-written and engaging. The characters and events are believable and authentic. Such a delightful read. A feel good read.
I love this book by new author Melanie Lageschulte. It is the 2nd in the series so make sure you read "Growing Season" first. The 3rd book should be out next year(2018). This book continues to follow Melinda on a journey called life. This book is about changes in life when it doesn't go as expected but maybe that's ok. Also if you ever wondered what it was like to live on a farm well this book tells you. It's about small town life, community, hard work and a feeling of accomplishment. It is not a fast paced action filled book, it is a good old fashioned read.
The story was so real to me. I live in the country and have a good size garden. The story of canning was very accurate. I've never had to help a chicken though. Very enjoyable reading. Wanted to have the book go on and on. Liked the neighbors getting together and helping others. Great.
How do you improve on an awesome book like Growing Season? You write Harvest Season. With imagery I can imagine I am on the farm with Melinda. This story helps me continue to improve on my own life and look at choices that are available. Melinda grew stronger and more sure of herself. I have always thought that my time living on a farm helped strengthen my character and the same has happened to Melinda. I read the book and found myself talking to Melinda, laughing with her and ultimately crying. In just a few months her character had developed. I am anxiously awaiting book three. Thank you for the awesome story.
This book is just what I needed to feel the comfort of a simpler life...and accepting change when it is forced upon you. The story is well paced, with warm characters which could have been from my small farm town. I love how Melinda spoke to the animals and learned to love the country life. I wish I was younger...I would consider taking her lead and become a farm girl again.
Books that are written in a series usually do not appeal to me, but this series is the exception. The descriptions made me remember the short time I spent in Iowa and how much I loved it. You cannot help but admire the main character as she positively overcomes one obstacle after another. It's a great reminder how important friends are in our life, but let us not forget the love and support of our animals as well. It breaks my heart to know that family farms that are described in these books are disappearing at an alarming rate, and we are losing a wonderful way of life. I'm glad it's so well captured in these books, so we can remember it.
